THE BLACK DOG OF COURAGE

Winston Churchill often referred to the black dog being upon him, meaning his times of deep depression. He was not the first to use that particular metaphor, as it has been used by other historic figures before him. I feel a certain need to apologize for the usage of the word black. We are and have been for some time, in the habit of using it to describe evil, ill deeds, bad guys and even the ruthless guys in western movies who almost always wore the black hat. We say black cats are unlucky but should know in this enlightened age that all of that is not true; at least I’m told we are enlightened, but that is somewhat in doubt and a subject for another blog.

I believe any of us who live with chronic pain and/or illness know very well what it is to live with a certain amount of depression at least from time to time. This sort of life is not a skip through a field of daisies and most of us couldn’t skip if we tried. No, I think it is entirely normal to express our frustration, pain and angst by having the blues. There, I used another color. Personally, I think screaming lime green would be a far more accurate description of this particular feeling. It would have to be bright, neon green, hurting the eyes and playing with the senses. This particular sensory emotion is best recognized, endured and petted but not for too long. We don’t want to spoil our depression and make it feel too welcome.

I think we are far better served by talking about a large, glossy, healthy and very muscular black dog and that is the one who exudes strength; the strength of the black dog of courage. One has to have a great deal of that particular virtue to deal with pain every day upon wakening and retiring. Pain of this kind is with us all the time. It never goes on a vacation except when we have mastered sleep which is in itself a bit of a challenge. Pain that is this constant goes from bad to worse and is seldom better. That is why it is so frustrating when those who do not understand, you know, those folks out there frolicking in the daisy field, say irritating, inane things to us. They say, “Oh you must be better by now.”
Must I? Little they know about it. They just want me to be better so we can talk about them for a while or better still, I won’t talk about myself. This whole conversation with those daisy stompers can get worse if they venture into the whole area of, “Well dear, you must stop thinking so negatively. Just forget about it for a while and come out to lunch with me.”

The chances are I am probably still lying in bed at 11 am and still in my nightie. I have been trying to summon the courage to try out the body to get into the bathroom to wash my face and to brush my teeth. Going out to lunch would involve a whole list of items I am loathe to do such as putting on deodorant, changing into presentable clothing, doing something with my hair and attempting to put on my happy face. I would then have to get into the car, drive to our meeting place, sit on a hard or semi-hard surface while looking pleasant or at least trying to. I would have to choose some food on the menu which I believe would not keep me up all night or have me hugging my heating pad all night like some lover who is a super hero. Oh no, that all sounds like too much trouble and I can only think of a small hand full of folks I would cross that moat to please.

Many of us have a disease that will get worse but that is still not the point. We are all, every human being alive, playing for time. It is simply that many humans just don’t think about it or know that’s what they are doing. We seek that time by being as active as possible and not giving up. We seek that time by searching for the best doctors who deal with our disease. We achieve those extra years by keeping close watch on the black dog of courage and keeping him by our side.

Yes, I know this all sounds so morose and because I usually feel this way I am always surprised by friends or family who comment on my cheerful, upbeat personality. Me, cheerful and upbeat? What a shocker. It always causes me to remember how far I have journeyed in my battle to overcome. My body may be a wreck but that doesn’t mean all of me has to be. Where is that lovely, big, strong and life-giving black dog of courage? He is right here beside me. No, not George, my little Yorkie, although he does truly believe himself to be all that. There is a spirit I have discovered in my very soul, in my faith in a higher power and in my belief in life which gives me the courage I need. I was brought up to believe there is a power in this world and the next who loves me and is on my side, no matter what life brings to me. Keeping that faith alive in difficult days is often a huge challenge.

The black dog of courage is not to be found in some miraculous way. No, it lies in the dark corners of my life, bringing light to them and therefore to me. It lies in the little things like accomplishing a small chore such as washing and folding towels which makes me feel like I just accomplished something far more dazzling. It lies in that sense of accomplishment that comes from being useful. Seeing a job of any size well done, or at least done, accomplished and knowing I did it with my little, old, bent sick body. Hearing a small child react after an accomplishment and say, “I did it all by myself,” is a joyous, warm feeling and it is usually written all over their small faces. We never lose that need to achieve, however small or however large the task, chore or project. That feeling of “I did it” can apply to many actions. We don’t have to be famous artists, employee of the year or the greatest of anything except to ourselves and to our own souls.

The black dog of courage lies in going about the task anyway, no matter the circumstances. Of course, all of us with disabilities have our limits but we also have a long list of that which we can do. Mourning over what we cannot do may last for a day or much longer but there is a time when we must say, “But I can do this and this.” If you can make that “this” a mix of chores, duties and creativity you have the perfect blend to enrich the soul. That way you and I don’t have to live with complete compromise in our homes and our hearts. Regret can sting like depression; I suppose they are cousins because they can have the same effect on our lives and have to be recognized yet kept in their place behind lock and key at times.

The black dog of courage lives in your soul; it does not live in your body. Getting hammered by the throb, ache, sting and boing of pain is a difficult situation to endure but you can and so can I. We can take the meds we need to a certain extent, because help is available but that help is always a two-edged sword. There are always side effects with any drug from aspirin to the opioids. Never believe a doctor who tells you a medication has no side effects. It simply is not true. The other fact to embrace is that each of us reacts differently to every medication, treatment and therapy. We are individuals and that is the beauty of life, or at least one of its beauties. Your life and mine has many rivers to cross as we discover there are many ways to approach illness and change in our life that is brought on by these mortal bodies of ours. Just remember the body is not the boss; the black dog of courage is.

  1. SUE……GLAD TO HEAR YOUR DENTAL WORK IS DONE, AND AS CHRIS SAYS, ITS ANOTHER THING OUT OF THE WAY. I TOO CAN’T WAIT TO HEAR WHAT YOU AND JIM WILL BE GETTING UP TO WHEN HE RETIRES, HE WILL BE SUCH A COMFORT TO YOU…………HOW ARE THINGS SINCE YOUR LAST SHOT SUE? THINKING OF YOU ALL THE TIME……LOVE YOU ..JEN X

  2. Hello, folks. I’ve added some replies above. Glad to have had the energy to do so this afternoon. 🙂 Still feeling exhausted in the am. When will this pass??!!! At least it seems to be mostly morning now, but sheesh. I hesitate to schedule anything for morning right now. I do have a hair appt tomorrow morning. I’ll have to push through to get there, but know I will enjoy myself while there. Love my hair stylist and she finally opened in her new location – her house! She purchased her grandparents’ house within the last year and promptly went to work updating what was most pressing and getting to work on a shop in the house. Last month she was finally able to leave her old location and into the one in her home! Of course, it was after my appt. so I haven’t been there yet. Maybe I can even get a little glimpse of some of the rest of the work in the house. We’ve been talking about it for months. We’ll see. I’m excited for her. Sadie just came inside. She has been enjoying some outside time today since it is nicer out than yesterday. My phone says it’s 39* today and MUCH less windy. Much nicer out. I should take her out for a walk soon and take advantage of the sunshine. Wishing you all warmth and sunshine.

  3. Lyn
Yea I’m taking yogurt.and I plan to use the oestrogen cream to plump up the tissues there so they will be less thin and more resilient
    Thankyou for thinking of me.

    Chris

    • Chris, I’m sorry the poly removal is done is such a painful way. Please do as Lyn suggests and tell them about the infections so they will let you bypass that puddle with an antibiotic. I don’t blame you for being anxious about this as it sounds very unpleasant. Why can’t they give you something mild to sleep through it. There are so many possibilities. The creme is a good idea but oh boy…Love ya, Sue

Sorry EVERYONE…feeling badly today. Sore jaws, mouth, back and rear. See you all tomorrow. Sue

    • Chris:
I have silk longjohns, so warm and not so bulky to wear under your clothes. Got the idea from Sue some years ago. I will be pulling mine out come Monday, our temps are dropping down in the 20’s for a couple of days. Getting Lyn;s weather I guess. Then it “warms” up to the 30’s on Wednesday, when I have to drive the folks to Carolina. It will be a good 15′ warmer there usually. Hope you are feeling better

Keep cosy and a hottie on hand, I presume you have pain meds to keep you going?
VERY cold here -1c today, but the snow has almost gone, but its due back later in the week.
Hope you don’t get too much tomorrow, you just take things easy, and look after yourself.
      Love Jen x

  7. Tonie, hope you find this since there was no space on your entry last night as it was a reply…you know. UUMM! The dogs are in trouble with their Mama. Poor babies. Do they go inside more when it is cold outside? I know George does and if it’s raining excessively, forget it, as he just turns around and comes back in. I can’t remember if you ever said your FM likes dogs. Sure hope he does.
I know that coming down off of prednisone can be a bugger. I had a rheumy in CA who had me on it like a yoyo and it got very tiresome. I’m sure he had my interest at heart but gees. Hope all went well for you today with swimming and know you probably saw a bit of difference because of the come down. We all pray you have safe weather when you take your friends to the airport. Still just rain here. We’ve had a very mild winter thus far.
Same old, same old here while I nurse along another sore mouth from the dentist. It’s all that biting of the inside of the mouth that hurts when they’re working on the back teeth. Of course, one doesn’t know it until later. Takes a bit of time. As a dieting tool it sucks.
I can see why you are tired of birthday cake but saw your GS’s pic on FB and he’s so adorable. Five years old already. Whoosh. Do be good to yourself with all that housework. I got a new type of Roomba made by another company called Neato. I like it. It’s square and gets into corners better but we will see with time. Love, Sue

      • Ok Tonie, let me start over. I know how you feel about coming down from the prednisone. I too have been on a step down Pak. I knew what you were feeling the other day about being jittery. At first I didn’t realize it was the prednisone but thought it was because of not eating. I knew I had not been sleeping and it was probably the prednisone. When I read your post about being jittery because of it, I thought, oh yeah that is what is making me jittery. I have been taking 4 pills a day for 4 days. Today I took my last dose of 3 and tomorrow I will take 2 for 4 days then back to my maintenance dosage of 1 5mg a day. Good medicine but side affects stink! At least my hands feel better. I so wish I had a hot tub to get in when I get like this and hurt all over. I saw my Rheumatologist on Tuesday and he wants to try me on that new drug, Xjelsans. It has been advertised on TV a lot. It has so many side affects one being a chance of Lymphoma (cancer). He said he had only had one patient who had developed it and I told him that was one too many for me. I can’t afford it but he wants to try and get it for me from the drug company. I think my husband and my income will disqualify us. I kind of hope so because I really don’t want to take it! I don’t want to lose my good doctor either. My DH has been having a time of it. He has been fighting a kidney stone and gout. He finally passed the stone we think. It isn’t hurting him and it didn’t show up on his last x-rays. He was really hurting under his ribs and went to the ER last Monday morning about 1:30 AM and he has bronchitis and pleuasey. (not spelled right) an inflammation under the ribs that hurts really bad. He also has another kidney stone still in his kidney and they are going to break it up using radio waves before it leaves his kidney causing him more pain. So next Tuesday I will take him to get that done at 8:30AM. I really dread it because it is going to be so cold here. Not getting out of the 30’s if it even gets to 30! Will be in the teens that morning. I can’t complain as he has taken such good care of me since I had the cancer and still does.It does not matter how bad he feels. He hasn’t missed a days work through all this sickness. He is a keeper for sure. What part of NC are you driving to on Wednesday? It might be pretty cold in NC as well. I guess we all knew this was coming sooner or later. Hope we have a warm spring and winter doesn’t drag on too long. (((Hugs))) to you my friend. I know you have a lot going on in your life but know you are loved and have a lot of people praying for you. I believe in my heart that God has something special for you! Love you Tonie, Donna

      • Hi, Tonie, somehow this posted before I even got started so I rewrote a new one.

For everyone else, you can read the post I sent Tonie for latest information. There are way too many posts for me to answer. Too overwhelming. So I will start from here and try and keep up. I have written at least 3 long posts but lost them all. I think it had something to do with my email not being right or something. I think I have it fixed!
I have been reading about everyone and praying for all of you. I have been in a lot of pain especially the Rheumatoid Arthritis in my hands. Fortunately my back is feeling better. Could it be from all the prednisone I have been taking? Wow, just now thought of that. I do however want to share a Praise report with all of you who have been praying for my youngest daughter, Racheal. She finally had the biopsies on her breast 2 weeks ago. She got the results back Thursday. No signs of breast cancer!! Praise God! It came back all infection. They are going to do an MRI to see if there are abscesses with the infection and if there is, they will operate to remove them and clean her breast all out. She has been dealing with this and all the pain for over a year now and it seems there is light at the end of the tunnel! Please continue to keep her in your prayers. Thanks. Love and (((hugs))) to all of you! Donna

      • Good news, Donna, about your daughter! I do hope this does the trick for her! As for the med your Rheumy wants you to try, Xeljanz, my doc and I discussed it, rather he brought it up as one he wouldn’t suggest for me. All the patients in their practice that tried it found the side effects were too great, the benefits not so beneficial. 😦 Hard call. I know you don’t want to try it necessarily, yet don’t wish to lose your doctor for not giving it a go. Sorry you are in that spot. Maybe as you say you won’t qualify for assistance and that may help you. Then again, it might be a drug that could help?? Good luck!

      • Donna, such good news about your daughter. I also hope and pray the infection clears up quickly and hope she has good medical care taking care of the problem. Such a relief for you. Sorry your arthritis is acting up so much. Be as well as you can be, okay? Sue

    • Lyn, thanks for the well wishes. It seems that sores in the mouth always take awhile to heal and it will in time. It’s always something and as each of you know, we learn to live with a great deal. I enjoy all your pics of the pup and your cats. Little Luka has grown so much. Can’t keep them kittens forever, darn it. Love you, Sue

  8. Sue……is your mouth healing? Have you any xylocaine handy, just till it heals, I use Daktarin, it acts as a shield and forms a covering so the healing can progress….must be rotten for you.
    Wishing you better love….take care
    Jen x

    • Jennie, thanks for your wishes for my poor sore mouth to heal. It was a top rear tooth I had to have capped and the sore swelling is in the jaw joint in the back. They always take awhile but will be fine eventually. I’ll just add it to the list. I do have some of the med you mentioned but it’s pretty hard to reach and I have to be careful with the cain drugs due to tachycardia. Nice cold fluids help quite a bit as well as the salt water rinses in warm water. Hope you’re staying warm in your icy weather and pray you don’t ge too much snow. Love, Sue

  9. Donna….thinking of you love, and I loved the photo’s you posted on f/b, have you lost weight?
Delighted about the news on your dear daughter, what a relief……God bless….Jennie x

  10. Donna
That is good news of your DD. you must both be relieved. But hope all the infection clears up now
    Jen
Don’t think we’ll get much snow now….need some for the calanders photos!
Went out early to get some frosty ones but all gone ,so we had a cheese scone out instead!
    Blimmin cold tho but sunny
    Meeting DD later
Have to go round my dads he rang for me to sort some paperwork out…I bet it’s just circulars!
So meeting DD there and praps then go to town .
So lunch I got ready looks off..was doing salmon
It’s all change all the time…as then DD is meeting friends to see a musical show and having dinner out with them .
I’m glad she has so many good friends ..still where she used to live here and where she is now.i think it helps her get thru.nice to have friends from years ago..with me moving in the forces as a kid it didn’t happen.back then communication was just letters…no telephones abroad . And everyone drifted off
And in the forces you got used to all change and leaving behind. You just got on with the new place
Well I’d better get going..keep warm there Jen
    Chris

    • Chris, I’m not familiar with the medication you mentioned but I think anything would help if it’s for pain or relaxation since they aren’t going to do anything but give you a shot into the cervix. I know we will all be so relieved when you get it behind you…no pun intended. Hope you’re able to stay out of the cold weather and also hope your Dad’s mail or papers do not involve anything too time consuming. Think of both of you often and your husbands photography work. That must be so rewarding. I heard on the news the other day about them finding the remains of an old pirate and thought of your interest in history. Wasn’t that find in England? Do be as well as you can be until the procedure helps. SO sorry for your pain right now. Love you, Sue

      • Sue
Not heard if this pirate ship .ill have to google it
My dads mail was all circulars
Cold outside but warm in bed with wheatbag on my tum
        Chris

    • Hi Chris….supposedly the snow is due tomorrow, but don’t think it will be much as the forecast is for double figures at the end of the week, as much as 12c…..this is so weird, just got out my comforters for the beds too…….blast!!
I hope your pain has settled a bit love, stay in the warm and take care of yourself……love you…Jen x

      • Jen
Cold here today..my DD has snow only half hour away but us None…she sent me photos looks pretty.
She saw a show here last night and drove back home and it was all white .
It’s gonna be cold here till middle of week then warmer..maybe the winter won’t be much this year
Has Son got results back yet.? Has you DD had any more bladder trouble?
        Keep warm
        Chris

  11. Hey all
Sue. Got my swimming done and my floors cleaned. Made me a pot of lentil soup with veggies and chicken. It will be good on Monday. Supposed to be high of 23 with snow and wind chill below zero. Not looking forward to it but only min and tues so not so bad. Hope you are feeling better today
Donna I hope you are feeling better as well. I wouldn’t take that new med either too many side effects and with your history then I wouldn’t do it. Good news on your daughter. Love you too
Jennie. I got a call from my FM this morning. He said it was very cold too. And yes Sue he likes dogs. He is stuck on Ceasar. He will for sure not be here til school is out over there. Maybe sooner than June he said. Gonna get his ticket as soon as he gets a date he said lol He has a big family and we are the gossip of them all. Some for it some against it they all live in the same area so I am sure it is a juicy bit of gossip hope you are enduring the cold
Chris. I hear you on the warm bed. I know I won’t want to get out of my bed to feed on Monday and Tuesday. Stay warm
Everyone have a good warm weekend
    Love
    Tonie

    • Tonie, oh Brrrr! sounds miserably cold. Do the horses still have shelter? Hang in there with those early morning feeds. I am sorry to hear it sounds like June or near June for you FM to return. Sad news. Five months doesn’t sound that bad if you see it one month at a time. I’ll bet you guys are a phenomenon and any of his relatives that aren’t happy for you both are either jealous or cautious. Once they meet you one day, they will love you. Who couldn’t?
Do take care dear girl with those icy conditions and step carefully in those new boots. Love you, Sue

    • Hi Tonie….seems to be colder in most places in France, except for the South of course, a man who likes dogs and horses and sassy women….what more could a gal wish for? Yes I can well imagine the talk among his family? Bet you would like to be a fly on the wall in the family home huh?? To hell with the juicy gossip, once he is back, they will move on to someone else…..its your life my friend, and his, so whilst you won’t wish for disharmony in the family, you have a right to your own lives……and to be happy.
      Love ya
      Jen x

  12. Sue:
The horses have large trees to get under if they want to, no barn yet. That is on FM’s list for this summer. He even makes his own “honey do” lists. Can’t beat that ! So you think I could win em over with my Southern Charm ? I think they are just protective, plus the fact he said he would NEVER marry again is a point for gossip as well. It will work itself out. He is protective of his personal life with his family, doesn’t want them to know too much. Says it solves problems. 🙂
I have to get a battery for my Roomba. Glad I can get them on Amazon for much cheaper now. Hope Jim’s retirement comes thru soon for you. I know you will be glad to spend more time with the big guy.
    Love ya
    Tonie

    • Tonie, not only is your FM cute, well built but also wise. The man knows how to avoid conflict. It’s none of their business anyway but you and I, we all, know how families can be. Making his own honey do lists is wonderful. I have to give Jim several reminders and be careful about that so it doesn’t sound like nagging. Is repetition many times over nagging? Guess it is.
I know, I was relieved to find I could buy a battery for Roomba on Amazon as well and bought my last one there. I have a new Roomba downstairs and really like it. It doesn’t get stuck as often as my ten year old one did. Hang in there dear friend and all will be made right as it is intended. Jim will be awhile retiring as he works out his retirement income. Love ya, Sue

    • Tonie
That’s great to hear what he is planning this summer. Making plans is good.and he sounds so wise.people will always have their own opinions that’s life but you are you and that’ll be enough for you both ,the others will be won
      Chris

  13. Sue
That info was interesting on google..fancy you having that over there as it wasn’t on our Main news.it was perhaps just on the news in Scotland . I always think it’s fascinating how they reconstruct faces and there they are looking at you from the past
Do hope the mouth is easing
    Chris

  14. Good morning all
From the snowy mountains of the Blue Ridge !
We are getting our “light dusting of snow” this morning. All is becoming white and it is still cold. Which I prefer over the wind bite. All have been fed and watered as of daybreak. Now the horses are hanging outside my bedroom window by their feed bowls hinting they want feed. Not til tonight. I finally mixed Baby’s beets with her feed and she ate them. Not willingly. I had to fight her off Red’s until she got the hint. So maybe that will help her tummy now. I give them the feed at night to help keep them warm. It has molasses in it and is a great favorite.
I feel like a train wreck today. That Mack truck found it’s way into my bedroom and ran over me a few times. This major weather change, my TMJ, all combined are not a nice combo. Course most of you are already going thru this, like Lyn, But, I can lay around today in my PJ;s if I wish until time to go out and feed around 5 .
Sue, FM says we of age, so we make our own decisions. 🙂 Yep he is pretty smart.
Chris, I have my own list for this winter, but yet to have started on it. I am going to paint the kitchen cabinets, but am waiting until the people I work for leave. That way I have more time and feel more up to it. I have a tiny little roller that I use and it saves my hands. I can’t wait to see it brightened up.
I saw a picture of my son’s new girlfriend. She looks very young and she has a buzzcut. Yeah they all have tats these days.
Hey, if you like fig bars, I have found the BEST. Nature’s Bakery. They are whole wheat, 110 calories for two bars ( in a pack). I get them on Amazon, in the multipack of Apple, Blueberry and Raspberry. WOnderful things. I eat them a lot for lunch with an apple, or just as a snack with some coffee. Non GMO Kosher, Choesterol free, dairy free, 0 trans fats.
Everyone stay warm and gentle hugs to you all
    Tonie

    • Tonie, Sorry you’re fighting the elements down South but glad Baby is eating her beets so well. That’s a good thing and hope they are keeping her regular. How does the growth/wound look these days?
Glad your son is not alone. Hope he gets to see plenty of the kids. I’m not a soft cookie or soft bar fan I’m afraid. I prefer crispy. I, like Chris have to watch out for seeds i all foods. Glad you found something you like. You have a tendency to each so well whereas I practically live on Ensure these days. Rainy here…Sue

  15. Hey tonie
Those bars sound good..IM NOT SURE I COULD EAT FIG and raspberry Bars for the seeds..but the apple ones sound good..I like that sort of thing…..I used to love flapjacks as well until I couldn’t eat them.
Becos of seeds.ill see if they sell them here
I’m managing to maintain my weight..so that’s good it’s as hard as slimming!. Just have to lose three pounds by summer..so that’s easy
I bet you are itching to get going painting
    Chris

  16. Hello…….Well we got the snow as promised, but not as much as first thought, so happy about that.

Sue…..did you ever try what I suggested about the dry and sore eyes…..I think I suggested using any drops that were used for allergies, to dip in a cotton stick, and run it round the eye lids under and over, before using regular drops for the tears. All I can say is it has worked wonders for me, no more red rimmed eyes……..hope you will try it, there is nothing to lose.

Chris….I think this could work for you too…..did you get the snow yesterday? I am really proud of you that you are keeping your weight stable, is your tummy any better, I had a really bad attack of diver this morning, so having to rest up today…..take care….

Tonie….sounds like you are busy, glad to hear “Baby” has got the hang of the beets now, and by the sound of it, she doesn’t seem any worse. thinking of you with your TMJ, and hope you will be able to manage the painting when the time comes……

    Lyn……are you ok?

    Love to each…….Jennie xx

    • Jennie, hope you’re handling the cold from the snow. It must be beautiful to see. I’m not sure where you got the idea I have red rimmed eyes but I don’t. Those of us with Sjogren’s like Chris and I have dry eyes. Drops work the best and I don’t even use tissues near my eyes because Sjogren dry eyes act as magnets for any and all lint, dust, etc. Thanks for thinking of me though.
SOrry you have further gut trouble but not surprised as so many of us do. Holiday here today and most things closed. Later, Sue

      • Hi Sue…….Sorry about that, must have got you muddled up with someone else.
The snow has gone from here, but bitterly cold.
Gut trouble I can handle, its the crippling arthritis that is so hard to cope with.
Glad to hear your mouth is healing, at least you can enjoy eating properly again.
        Love you
        Jen x

  17. Sue
Good your mouth is a bit better..thank goodness.
I had some mash potato today filled me up,it was good…and some icecream.see how that goes!
Managing some housework if it’s not bending over on my tum. Bit by bit
    Jen
Hope your diver feels better or easing at least.
Mine is the same but I think. well been told ,that the polyp,in uterus will play it up as well.but I’m taking the spasmonal still….but that’s drying..it’s all a trade off

Cold tonite gives -6 c here..hopefully there’ll be some frost for some good photos for the
    Calandar in the morning
    Chris

  18. Good evening all:
Well, we lost another great musician. Glen Frye, he died of complications of RA, and Chronic colitis. You don’t hear much about men with RA. Too bad he didn’t come out an talk about it more., But.. anyway, sad. Love the Eagles music and his guitar and voice was a lot of it. Watched a great movie tonight. “Female Agents”. I didn’t know til it came on, it was in French and German. It is about 5 French women who worked with the English to get a geologist out of France who was scouting the beach for the Normandy landing. Then they had to kill a colonel in the Nazi’s. Anyway, it was great.
Chris, glad you got to eat some. Mashed potatoes are so good on a bad tummy. And good too. I have them so seldom of late. I ate a chicken sandwich at Burger King today. Seldom do I eat out there. But I was so hungry when I got done. I had skipped lunch. THEN I had my ice cream .
Jennie, hope you are staying warm. It was very cold here today, and tonight it is supposed to get extremely cold.
Hope you all are staying warm. And feeling good
    Love
    Tonie

    • Hi Tonie
Yes bad news about Glen Frye, felt gutted about that, he has such a sweet voice.
The film sounds good, will look out for that one.
Boy do I love my mashed potato, I like to add protein to mine, such as beaten egg or cheese, or sometimes tuna and
herbs. Got some blue Persian salt, and its low in sodium, and tastes great.
Yes love, I am staying warm, but so very tired, an attack of o/a always does this to me, still life still has to be lived huh?
      Look after yourself
      Love ya
      Jen….x

  19. Tonie
Sounds like just what you needed followed by an icecream..perfect
Yea I heard he’d had RA and stuff..it’s a shame he didn’t say like Venus with her sjogrens did
    Hope you get to rest!!!?

    Jen
Is it cold with you? Sunny here but cold..but funny ..Altho -6 c it seemed warm thru the nite.i was pushing off the quilt
Is it too cold for you to walk Sacha? I expect it is..
    Hope the diver getting better
Gonna do some lunch now.just changed all the bedding.takes two of us ages..I remember when just I used to do it and quicker…oh dear
    Chris

  20. Chris…..just replied to you, and it got wiped off…..nice.
Hope the spasmonal helps you till the procedure is done.
Snow gone, but -1c very cold.
Hope the photo’s come out well, you must send them in e-mail to me when they are done.
Diver a lot better thanks, not going out with the dog, can’t cope with the tractor situation, not good for me to have my arm pulled out of its socket, when Sacha freaks out as they pass us, hence the purchase of a treadmill.
Going to be tropical by Thurs, can’t wait, get the garden chairs out.
    Take care
    Love Jen x

  21. Hi, All, well, “normal”, whatever that is, didn’t last long. It’s never pain free, but back to tired today. I did get a couple of errands run and rooms cleaned. Completely forgot to get dinner into the slow cooker until well past when I should have. Thankfully, DH was able to make some spaghetti while I taught some lessons. So frustrating when you can’t remember simple things. Everyone is talking about a possible snow storm headed our way. One weather model has it staying south of us (sorry, Tonie), others has us getting anywhere from a few inches to a sizable amount. We’ll see. I don’t get excited until the day before. t this point they are saying mid-Friday into Saturday. What are they saying down your way, Tonie? Yesterday and today have been COLD with lots of wind. -6 to -8C (quick conversion for our overseas peeps), down to around -15 C with wind chill. Short walk with Sadie yesterday, none today. She didn’t even stay in the back yard long, and she doesn’t mind the cold. Anyway, I’m looking forward to the slight warm up we are supposed to have before the possible snow. Poor DD is scheduled to work an half hour or so drive away from us on Saturday, and SB is to work overnight Friday night and Saturday night. We’d all be just as happy to have it pass us this time. Well, enough about that. Little boy kitten had his little snip-snip yesterday, came home acting as if nothing happened. Not much else happening here.

Chris, I will be so happy when you have all your latest behind you.

Sue, hope your mouth is progressing well.

Jennie, enjoy the warm up! Hope your OA starts behaving.

    Best to All!

    • Lyn
That is so cold..no wonder you are back from normal!
Hope this snow bypasses you and your family are safe and warm
I’m just treading water with the discomfort take a tablet for the spasms or not as it presents itself
      Chris

    • Lyn, I do understand with the weather flip flopping it is killing me too ! We had about 2 inches of snow today, and we are supposed to warm up tomorrow and Friday, and then get dumped on Friday night and either Sat or Sun, they can’t make up their minds. But for sure we are getting a lot of snow. You stay warm, and take care.
      Love
      Tonie

      • I thought it looked like it might be hitting you hard. 😦 It depends which track it takes for us. It should be a plowable snow either way. You stay warm and take care, too!

  22. Sue
    Hope you are ok.
    Jen
You didn’t say how DS and DD were..are they better now?
Have you met your new neighbour…did the previous people sell their house ? Or are they renting?
    It’s nearly 6am here
We are out this morning for Tea and scones for breakfast and hopefully some frosty photos.then opticians for DH and Inr tests
    Chris

  23. Hi,
Cold enough to cut me in half today whilst out….so glad to get home.
    Lyn
Hope the snow holds off, but if it does come, may it not last…keep safe, glad you seem to be a bit better.
    Chris
I am ok, cross with DH though, had a heated car seat cover, he saw another on that included a massager, he gave my old one to a friend without asking me, the new one is not suitable, the massage pads stick in my back, and it barely get warm, so now I have the bother of getting yet another…..men!!
Hope the pain is bearable till you are sorted at the hospital.
    Sue
Not heard from you for awhile, are you ok love? I know you get bad days and don’t always feel up to it…..love you.
    Keep safe everybody……and warm
    Jennie x

  24. Jen
Oh dear I can see why you are cross……why didn’t dH ask you to try it first and now in this cold weather you gotta wait…….but he probably thought he was doing you something good. Men! He praps thought a massager she’d like that……Just thought could you swop this one back with your friends one at all? Bless him tho …..you love him really!

DH inr… Well the hosp, rang tonite it is too high 4.4 had it done this morning. Hasn’t been up there since he started the thinners.prob. The alteration of meds…or he had oily fish two days in a row..dunno.he has to stop, for two days and go back on a lower dose.it should be between two and three it’s usually regular as we are careful with our diet
Had to go to opticians for dH ..here’s a good one he has to have new glasses as his eyesight has got better!
No photos as no frost this morning for calendar
Cold tonite but gives it warming up next few days
    Chris

    • HI CHRIS…….DIDN’T GET THE CHANCE TO TRY IT, HE JUST GAVE IT AWAY WHEN I TOLD HIM I WAS GOING TO…..CAN’T SWAP IT WITH MY FRIEND, AS THE HEATER DOESN’T GET VERY HOT, AND SHE NEEDS THE HEAT IN THE SAME WAY I DO…..ANYWAY, BEEN ON AMAZON AND GOT ANOTHER COMING.
AND YES COURSE I LOVE HIM, HE DOES EVERYTHING WITH THE BEST INTENTIONS, WITH NOT A BAD BONE IN HIS BODY.
I HOPE YOUR DH WILL BE ABLE TO GET HIS MEDS ALTERED AND HE CAN GET HIS 2/3 TARGET SOON, NEW GLASSES FOR BETTER EYESIGHT, YUP THAT SURE IS A NEW ONE.
      HOW ARE YOU LOVE….ANY BETTER??
      LOVE JEN X

    • hris, Sorry to hear DH is having to adjust thinners but good they found it. Good news on the other hand about his eyesight getting better. How are the photos going for him? Is it mostly scenic views or churches and historic buildings? I know how much he loves that sort of thing.
I hope you are doing better and getting a bit more sleep. Good to get updates on DD and hope all is better at home for her. Good thing you have GS to let you know the scoop. Here it is rain, rain and rain. No snow or frost thus far. I’m having so many problems right now a bit down in the dumps but it will flip around I’m sure. Funny how the pain can cycle so much for each of us. Thinking of you even when I don’t feel up to writing each day. Wrote a new blog which hasn’t been posted as yet. Love, Sue

  25. Evening all:
Well, what a day !! Day 2 of no water. Filling a bucket at the outside faucet and keeping it in the bathtub for whatever I need. Hopefully it will be warm enough tomorrow to thaw out, if not my DD’s bf is a plumber and he will come over and help me. EIther way I am getting water tomorrow. Enough with the primitive living ! Like Lyn, we are supposed to get dumpled on with snow this weekend.
I took Ms Alice and her family to the hotel at the airport today. After sitting with her all day, then I get to drive back in the snow and rush hour traffic. Took me 4 hours to get home in what should have been at the most 2. I am exhausted. But with the Lord;s help and my 4 WD I got back down the mtn to my house. Nothing had been put on the roads, just aggravated me ! Tomorrow, I have to go to the feed store and get chicken feed. I am sleeping in , the animals got a late feed tonight. As my eyes are crossing, I will close.
    Sue praying for you sweetie.
    Love to all
    Tonie

      • Tonie, unless I have you geographically misplaced, I believe you are to really get hit by this storm. One of our local TV stations is forecasting 8-14″ in our area (where I am should be somewhere in the middle of that?) I plan on having all done I need to tomorrow so I can just ride the day out on Saturday. DD was told she can just do a shorter shift in the office in our area – 5 minutes away rather than a half hour+. Her car is not great in snow, so not sure if she might prefer a ride to and from. My little sports car has AWD and is getting snow tires on it today, and is also manual transmission, so overall might be better than hers. SB is pretty much prepared to stay at the hotel where he works (he is scheduled night shift Friday and Saturday.) He will take our Nissan Rogue that has AWD. Glad you have your Jeep! (SB is sometimes wishing he kept his for snowy times, but you know boys and sports cars…)

      • Oh Lyn, it truly does sound like you’re all heading for some challenging times with this new snow storm. You’ll be in my prayers and thoughts, of course as each of you face transportation problems and I’m glad you went shopping and plan on staying in and out of it as much as possible. Love the pics on FB of the animals and think it’s adorable that Luka and Rufus are buddies. You must have a soothing effect on your pets because it all seems to have gone so smoothly, getting a new family member.
I’ve been absent from the blog a bit due to feeling crappier than usual with much joint pain. My shoulders are quite bad right now which affects everything. I have also been having a lot of trouble with my eyesight. THey tire and dry so easily, especially in the evening. Think it’s having the heat on so much as well as the usual Sjogren’s. I do have cataracts and pray they are not getting worse. It’s almost impossible to see the screen of the computer in the evenings and it’s discouraging to me.
Do stay warm dear friend and know you are in our prayers for safety and health. Love, Sue

    • TONIE…..STILL NO WATER, HOPE YOU GET THE THAW SO IT CAN BE SORTED OUT.PRIMITIVE LIVING, BEEN THERE, DONE THAT, NEVER AGAIN.
YOU ARE SO GOOD TO MISS ALICE, I HOPE HER FAMILY APPRECIATE ALL YOUR EFFORTS, I AM SURE THEY DO.
TAKE A REST TOMORROW AFTER YOU HAVE GOT THE CHICKEN FEED….ANY NEWS ON THE FRENCH FRONT??
      LOVE JENNIE X

    • Tonie, Thank the Lord you got to and from the airport safely. Oh dear, but it does look like you are in for it with this huge snowstorm. Hope you got Nikki’s friend to fix the pipes. Did he have to crawl under? I’m assuming so inspite of your awful weather. It is fortunate for you to have him there on the mountain. Are they going to enjoy the snow or are they nervous? Probably the kids are looking forward to it and the adults not so much. Good time for you to have Ms. Alice out of town so you don’t have to go over there if the roads are bad. How’s the back behaving?
You’ll be in my prayers and thoughts with all this white coming at you.
Well, just had the new washer/dryer delivered. Not much pleasure in having to replace a set bought just three years ago but that’s the way it is. These had better work and work well. I hate spending money on such boring stuff…and so much these days.
I appreciate knowing you’ve been thinking about me lately. I’ve really been in a state physically. So many changes with my cartilage disease such as shoulders and ankles, even my fingers. Had to get a couple of rings upped two sizes…hated that.
Hope the news from France is good but did hate to hear that part about it being June but alas…time will pass. Thinking of you with painting the cupboards but for now know you’re just thinking of caring for everyone with the snow. Much love, Sue

    • Jennie, Sorry to hear about your car seat. They can be such a comfort on an icy or cold day. Glad you’re getting a new one. Sounds like DH is getting out of the dog house. Sometimes good intentions don’t turn out too well and any woman would certainly understand your feelings. Awe, but it is interesting the difference in the way the male and the female minds work.
My next appt. for shots will be first week in Feb and I will also see the rheumy at that time. I’ve felt generally lousy ever since the dentist last week. Aches, pain everywhere and get discouraged by it all the time. IBS always there. Yesterday was Jim’s birthday and we were going out for prime rib but GS was sick with a bad cold so may all take him out this weekend for his favorite, prime rib. I cooked him a steak, scalloped potatoes last night and stopped by the bakery for chocolate eclairs. I had the potatoes and some yellow squash.
Wrote a new blog last weekend but Natalie hasn’t had a chance to post it yet. I hope you’re surviving the cold and understand how rough it can be. We had cold fog today. Yuk. Do take care dear lady. Love, Sue

  26. Sue
    Good to hear you
I realised you must be feeling not so good..sure wish it would all go for you .
And soon to get a meal to all enjoy out for DH birthday, but his meal you made sounds really good and mashed pots well …I know but they are safe
I had to go to Dermy with my dad this morning he has three basal ones to come off his face and a big one on his arm..the one on his face is on his nose and they are doing plastics on all of them.but the one on his nose will leave him disfigured.if he left it longer it would involve the rostral.
So that was done and reassured my dad..he seems ok about it..but it will be day surgery so at home with that and a new carer ! Rang up the agency to make sure they send a good one ..then off to Dr for me my tum is sore ,getting worse so they are doing a swab tomorrow morning…ugh
    So it’s up early again….
DH has had to increase his bp again ,he tried to come off them but he can’t
    All go!
These cataracts are a bu..er…I’ve got one and it keeps feeling like I gotta clean my glasses or rub something out of the way..I hope yours aren’t worse will you go to the opticians…..doesn’t it feel like you’d just like to stay away from all medical stuff..I’m sure it does for you
I’ve noticed my eye are dryer with heat on as well as my ski
    Tonie
Hope the water got sorted for you ..keep safe in that snow…no slipping so be careful
Lyn also you to keep inside if you have to
Well I’m gonna try for a meal tomorrow chicken and roast pots with gravy ..I’m a sucker for gravy and real common with it I like it really thick ….I know it’s supposed to be thin but that’s me
Anyway that’s the plan if I feel like it after the swab is done
    Chris

    • Chris, I’m glad your Dad is going to get those basal cells removed. Jim had plastic surgery of one on his upper lip and it turned out great…was very expensive, but worth it. Basal cells can’t be ignored that’s for sure and can spread quite badly. Hope he heals well and sure do hope this new caregiver will be a compassionate, patient one. Will it be a woman or a man? Doesn’t he do a bit better with a male? They don’t seem to be as good on the housekeeping end as women but can identify with him a bit better.
Your poor man and his B/P problems. What a time he’s had. As far as you I thought the surgical procedure was schedules to go after those polyps. Is that not true? You need to get that behind you don’t you think? I’m so sorry for all the cramping you are having with it.
I like a thicker gravy that doesn’t run all over the place, that’s for sure, especially with mashed potatoes. When I made those scalloped potatoes last night I used mushroom soup, milk, sliced potatoes, onion salt and tons of cheese. They were so good. I usually just use butter, milk and cheese when I made mac and cheese, however. I follow a recipe I got from TV many years ago from that wonderful old singer Pearl Bailey. Do you remember her? She said at her house mac n’ cheese was considered dessert. Funny the things you remember. Sure hope I get to feeling better soon. Later dear girl, Love, Sue

  27. Good evening all
Just grabbing a quick bite of leftover pot pie before I go out and feed. I am trying to wait unit almost dark that wY I can shut up the chicks at the same time. Another long day. Had to go to town. Then to DD to get the plumber. They were stranded with no snow tires and live on a hill with a steep winding driveway. Still no water. All has been warmed, rewrapped and heated up with heat tape around the main line. Something has to let go soon, I need a shower !, pray for me all of you!s that it will break loose. I let them take the Jeepmso they can get out to work during the snow storm
Got my box from France !, This man is good !, a big bottle of Estée Lauder perfume spray ( pleasures) which I love, a box of Jeff de Bruges all natural chocolates. Of course I have had a couple and they are awesome !, a book on horses, a drawing he did of two horses together beautiful. He is talented. And another part of his “never ending love letter ” to me . I am quite overwhelmed. And miss him a lot. Now if I only had some water so I don’t have to go to my brothers for a shower !,,
Hopefully I can go and swim tomorrow before the snow, but yes Lyn. They say we are to get 2-3 feet of the stuff swiftly dumped on us, I have coffee, bread and plenty of chocolate so I am good !,, prayers for all of us who are going to be hit with this storm. So many out in the rural areas like me and inner cities will be the worst. Just praying everyone keeps their electricity on
Sue, prayers for you dear friend
    Love to you all
Floating on my mountain top 😎

    • Tonie, well, I think that love letter will keep you warm during the coming storm. Do stay safe as you huddle with your good perfume and munching on your chocolates. How thoughtful your man is. The book is also a thoughtful idea for you in particular.
Glad the kids have a way to get around but do you? Is your other car equipped with snow tires? You’re such a good Mom. Hope they’re all prepared for bundling up after living in AZ so long. Do take care and know we’re all thinking of you and talk about floating? That’s good old soggy Oregon. Glad your supplies are laid in and you’re ready and also glad Judy and your brother are so close. Prayers for safety dear friend. Love, Sue

      • Sue
Yes I have 4 WD on the truck. Otherwise they would just be stick ! They only get to use it til after the snow. Just so she can get to work and back. They borrowed a sled from Judy and have been having a ball all day. None of them except Nikki have ever been in the snow. So much fun. Me, I have hibernated all day except to go and feed. The snow is about 2 ft and we are supposed to get another foot tomorrow. I will be ready for it to go away by Monday !,,
Yes, FM is very thoughtful. He knows what I like. And I have never had chocolates like these
        Love ya
        Tonie

  28. HELLO…..TONIE, HAPPY FOR YOU, ITS NO MORE THAN YOU DESERVE.
SUE……I AM IN A BAD PLACE, THE WORRY OF MY SON IS WEIGHING HEAVY, HE IS ILL IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE, AND I JUST DON’T KNOW HOW TO HELP HIM……
    BACK SOON…….JEN X

    • Jennie, I am sorry to hear you are so worried over Tim. Didn’t he get a clean bill of health? I’m assuming you got the report on the last lab work you were all waiting for? If he continues to worry when they can’t find anything, I can see why either outcome would worry you, also. Just remember sweet friend you are just his Mom and can’t influence him as much as a doctor or perhaps some professional counseling would. It’s wonderful he knows you and Claire are there for him but maybe that time has come for another voice.
Please Jen, try to let go of your fear just as much as you can by doing what you can do, placing Tim in God’s hands and realizing once our kids become adults we sometimes just have to be there but can do very little. He knows you love him and I know you remind him of that often. He has to let go of his fear, especially if he is basically, physically healthy. Hugs and concern for both of you and let me know anytime if you want to talk or chat on FB. Love you, Sue

      • HI SUE….THANK YOU FOR GETTING BACK TO ME, CLAIRE AND I HAVE DISCUSSED THINGS AT LENGTH, AND AS SOON AS TIM HAS FINISHED WITH DOCTORS AND HOSPITALS, WE ARE INSISTING HE TALKS TO SOMEONE QUALIFIED TO HELP HIM OVER IS FEARS WHICH ARE TOTALLY IRRATIONAL. HIS VERY WORDS TO US WERE “I DON’T DESERVE TO BE HAPPY, AND I FEEL GUILTY” WE CANNOT MAKE SENSE OF IT, IF HE WAS A BAD PERSON I GET THAT, BUT HE IS A LOVELY PERSON, AND I AM SO PROUD TO CALL HIM MY SON, AND CLAIRE SAYS HE IS HER LIFE PARTNER……ITS HARD. HE WAS DOING SO WELL AFTER GETTING OVER THE PROBLEMS OF MS ETC, SO WILL KEEP PRAYING GOD WILL LOOK AFTER HIM AGAIN AND WE CAN GET HIM BACK TO HOW HE WAS…….I CAN ONLY BE AT THE END OF THE PHONE, AND TRY TO GET HIM TO SEE THAT HE HAS NOTHING TO FEEL GUILTY ABOUT…..I LOVE YOU….JEN X

  29. Jen
    Just emailed you

    Tonie
They are saying about the weather with you on news.hope your water is on and your elec stays good
    Along with your internet
What a thoughtful pressie from your FM.lovely things and personal just for you .i think it’s wonderful

Well I went for a swab ..you know where ..and had to have these steel things up and a cervix one taken and she thinks she can see thrush….so we will see…but it was so sore having it done and is Even now.so I’ve put my oestrogen cream up and await the results.
    Sue
Hope things are a bit better for you and GS feeling better
    Chris

    • Thanks Chris, yes GS is back in school, cold much better. I am much the same but sorry to hear you are still so sore. I can imagine you will be for a couple of days after that D&C procedure. Digging around “up there” sounds and is miserable. If it is thrush, they should be able to Tthat. Watch for any discharge or bleeding and call the doc if… Hopefully they learned something that will help you. Do take care and do what gives you comfort…heat? Thinking of you. Love, Sue

      • Sue
I didn’t have aD&C. Just a swab test high up in cervix.D&C still to come soon
But sore tho ..age I suppose
Yea I’m putting heat on it
I do wish spring would come and I’m sure you will feel better then with your joints.saw on TV that they are doing research into rain and joint pain in some university over with you. They could have saved there money and asked us!
        Chris

  30. Oh, Chris, I am so sorry you had to have that done. I pray it was worth it and helps! I join Sue in relief that your dad will get those spots taken care of.
    Jennie, you have my prayers.
Tonie, what wonderful gifts from your FM! I am thrilled and excited for you. Wonders to enjoy while the snow comes down. I am quite pleased that we are not expecting 2-3′! I’ve seen 2 projections so far today one has us in a band expecting 8-14″ and another 12-18″. What will fall will fall.
Sue, sorry you have been experiencing more joint pain. I confess my eyes have been drier lately, too, although I don’t have Sjorgren’s. It is unpleasant and does affect vision. Your dinner does sound yummy. I hope the new washer and dryer last this time! I can’t believe your bad luck with that last set!
I won’t be much longer, but do have good news to share regarding my DD. She was working basically 2 part time jobs – at an urgent care and at a spine and neurology office in addition to taking online classes toward a degree in Health Care Management. They Spine and Neuro job had the promise of going full time at some point, which appealed to her. However, lately her office manager (who performs the job poorly in my opinion) has been driving her batty. She saw signs that her hours may be cut rather than added to, due to a doctor leaving the office. Her superior at the urgent care offered her her full time job back, which she thought she’d take. Yesterday she was talking to the supervisor above the office manager to the Spine and Neuro place and learned that the office manager is going to be let go that day! She was offered a full time position at the Spine and Neuro place as well! It pays more and will give her more experience toward what she wants to do, so she is going to accept. Isn’t that something to be wanted both places and have her pick? I’m a proud and happy mama. 🙂

    • Lyn
How good that is for your DD.you must have felt so excited for her as well.she must be well thought of.celebrate tonight ??
I hope the snow doesn’t get as bad as it had said for you we are getting some truly bad news items here about it
I’m still a bit sore..but bound to be better tomorrow
      Chris

      • We are happy for DD. She will make a better income and get more experience – win-win! Thanks for your concern re the snow. Thankfully, we are not in that blizzard band. We will have high winds and a bunch of snow, but not the worst of the forecast. 😉 Now you rest and take it easy, especially down there. 🙂

    • Lyn, that is good news for DD and such good timing, huh? It sounds like her interest is more front office than back office with the patients. Sounds like the neuro clinic job would be great experience. Which job means less winter driving time? I know you’re peaceful and proud about this and I am pleased for both of you.
Also, good news about the snowfall for you. Hope it is easily managed. I know your whole family is accustomed to dealing with it and sounds like the cars are ready. Do stay safe and warm and know you’re thought of fondly, Sue

      • Sue, she likes both. We’ve found she likes a variety of duties rather than the same ol’ all day for sure. She has gone back and forth between front and back. 🙂

    • Lyn how great. That timing was awesome. Glad you aren’t getting all our snow. My neighbor came up with his 4 wheeler and snow plow and dug me ou and even did a path to feed the animals, but it will be gone come morning. I have used this day as down time to rest tell your DD congrats from us all

I like to use condensed mushroom soup for cooking as well.i sometimes use it to bake chicken pieces and fish too,and Make it a fish pie with mash and grated cheese.
Well new washers……thankgoodness you’ve got rid of the old ones.. Will all manner of things be washed now ??
Is it still raining with you..it’s been like that today here and warmer tho
    Chris

    • Hi all, we’ll I see everyone including me is having problems health wise and weather wise. I have been dosed up on high doses of prednisone and coming off of it now. The cold has been horrible around here. My DH had to have a procedure to crush the kidney stone in his kidney on Tuesday. It was about 17 degrees and I had to get him to the hospital at 6:30 AM. It was so cold. I am never up getting ready at 5:00 in the morning. I can’t complain because he takes care of me everyday. Always makes sure I have supper even if he goes out to a meeting. I am very Blessed with him as the rest of you seem to be with your spouses. Sounds like you have a extra special man there too Tonie! I am so glad for you!. I have been having problems with my eyes lately not being able to see good at night when trying to read. I have already had cataract surgery on both eyes and artificial lens put in with 20/20 vision in both eyes. I still have to use reading glasses. I also have glaucoma but I use my drops every night. I had not thought about the heat. My eyes are dry as well. Back to DH. He is doing well an passing little pieces of stone. That machine uses radio waves to crush the stone and those waves hit him 4,000 times in 45 minutes. I could hear it when the doctor called me to say he was almost finished and had done great. He never missed a day of work. The schools were out that day for a teachers workday. He didn’t get to work today though. We also are getting hit with ice sleet and snow. He drives a school bus. Last night it started out as snow, about 3 inches ,then ice and sleet all day today and round 3 tonight will be all snow. They say 8 to 10 inches but I don’t think we will get too much more. If we do it will really surprise me. So far not too many without power. They were expecting a lot more because of ice. Praise God so far so good. I am on oxygen and we are on a well so it would be bad if we didn’t have electricity. No water and I would have to drag an oxygen tank around. At least we have gas cooking. SUE, glad you are starting to feel a little better. Looking forward to your new blog. Glad you got a new washer and dryer. TONIE, I hope you got your water back on and I pray you won’t lose electricity. Great gifts from your FM! Be careful going out to feed your animals. I don’t know how you do it everyday especially in the winter. I couldn’t help but think about you the other morning when I took my DH to the hospital so early in the morning. LYN, good news on your daughters job! Glad she got the one she really wanted. You stay safe in the storm too! The winds were so bad here today in NC, my windows were rattling. Try not to go out if you don’t have too. I did once 5 years ago and slipped and fell and broke my leg. So I stay put when things are bad outside! CHRIS, so sorry you are going through so much with your health. Hopefully soon you will start to feel better. Glad your dad has those spots removed from his face. I pray he is going to do well. Is his new care giver a male or female? At least he got to stay at home like he wanted.
JENNIE, so sorry you are going through so much worry over you son. I have been there and it is extremely difficult to let them be adults and not worry too much about them. You said you didn’t have anyone to turn to. Could you talk to one of your doctors? Maybe they could give you something to help you relax. If I am stepping out of line I don’t mean to. I am just worried about you dear friend. All we can really do as mom’s is pray for them and leave them in God’s hands. I hope I haven’t missed anyone. I love you all and sending love and (((HUGS))) ! Take care everyone, Donna

      • DONNA….NO DEAR YOU ARE NOT OUT OF LINE, BUT MY DOCTOR CANNOT FIX WHAT IS CAUSING MY PAIN, AS ITS MY CONCERNS OVER MY SON, NOT A MEDICAL PROBLEM, I HAVE ALL THAT STUFF COVERED, YOU ARE SUCH A SWEET FRIEND AND I APPRECIATE OUR CONCERN….IT WILL COME RIGHT WITH THE HELP OF THE GOOD LORD….TAKE CARE SWEET FRIEND XX

      • Donna:
I know in the Carolinas ya’all are not so used to those really cold temps. But every now and then you get them. Stay inside and stay warm. Actually my animals motivate me to move, get out and do more than I would without them. I wrap up good and tight before I go outside believe me, carry my phone in case I fall or something, and just take care and believe God is gonna protect me.
My eyes were so dry this morning I could barely read , even with my cheaters on. I didn’t realize they were so dry. Added my drops and then all was well. I keep some drops by the bed to use if I need them. I am glad your DH came thru everything ok.
        Love ya
        Tonie

  32. Chris
    Some
Sorry you are in pain. I hate the gyno. But seems we women never cease with all the joys of our medical needs. It always hurts me, either from the duckbill or just their digging. I like to go to women cause it seems they are kinder. Feel better

  33. Sue
New washer and dryer. Yes I do pray they last longer. I dread the day I have to do that again. My dryer is 10 or 12 years old but I could make it without a dryer. The washer is the thing. Hope you continue to feel better.
    Love you
    Tonie

    • Tonie, relieved to hear from you. Sounds like you’re doing okay anyway. I assume you got water? Nice of the neighbor to make a path for you. So glad the kids are having such a good time with their first experience in the snow. You know they will love that area forever now. Hope they’re all doing okay. Take care with that next storm and be careful. We sure don’t want you breaking any part of you.
Yes, Let’s hope this new washer/dryer set last for us. I told the guys to shoot it and when they got it out on the porch I heard one of them say, “We should just let it roll out into the street like Sue wanted.” Cute, huh? They had heard all the horror stories from the repair man who is the store owners son. Nice family. Must close for tonight dear friend. Had the grands this afternoon and now must clean up after dinner. Love, Sue

  34. Sue
Hope you clean up quick and get to rest
Good to have the grands tho
    Tonie
I like the name you gave it ..the duckbill I will use that, made me laugh
I’m awake with the soreness there .just had a cup,of tea and Panadol .see if it touches it
I hope this storm passes now over the weekend. Stay inside as much as you can.is your water on?
    Donna
He is still waiting to have those spots to be removed .the plastic surgeon has to fit him in .we won’t
Know who the carer is until she comes really..but I will ring a couple of days before the change to see.
He likes to be home as twice a day he goes for coffee in the comm lounge and has all the ladies make a fuss of him and he can still go,to town with his carer guiding him on his scooter ..have to see if the new one will do that tho
Well try and get to sleep again got my hottie for tum on …gonna go out for a cheese scone and tea for breakfast…
    Chris

  35. Good Morning:
Chris, yes I forgot to tell you that my water came back on yesterday. DD;s friend got it all covered up again, and warmed up the lines. My heat tape wasn’t plugged in the right plug (my friends husband did that, I had been trying to find it 🙂 ) So about 30 minutes after he left it came through. So I guess the warming finally thawed things out. I also had to thaw out my ice maker ! We got more snow last night and due to get another foot or more today ! It was a workout going to feed today. The path that was cleared for me yesterday is now under a half a foot of snow.
Oh well, it will melt away soon I hope. Got a call from my FM this morning, so that makes my day. He says things are pretty crazy over there. He is so near the German and Swiss borders security is up all over. He says there are police and military everywhere. They must use a special pass to get into the schools to work, etc. Just pray for his safety and that of all his co-workers.
Sue, your old washer n dryer must have been just a lemon. Maybe they were made on Monday ! They say that is the worst day for things to be made.
Prayers for you all in this snow. Lyn I hope you are all in nice and snug. I have fed and will be inside til this evening when I have to feed again. I need to struggle down to Judy’s and feed the cat too.
    Love to you all
    Tonie

  36. Hello, everyone! Sorry to hear so many with concerns 😦 You will all be in my prayers. We are doing well here. DD’s office closed today due to the weather. She couldn’t have gotten out of our driveway anyway. The storm has taken a shift in track and now we are getting much more snow than they thought. I have no idea how much we have now, but we could end up with over 2 feet (and probably will.) Time will tell. It is blowing, too, which makes the amount all the more difficult to measure. Poor Sadie can’t really enjoy it. It is way too deep. DH cleared the patio areas and some grass area for her, but more accumulates quickly. I’m disappointed we couldn’t have our walk in the snow. It is just too deep for her. It is doubtful any plow will be through our development until tonight or tomorrow. My morning started off around 7:30 or so when a neighbor’s AWD SUV got stuck in the street in front of our house. He lives just a few doors up, so was almost back home from trying to get to work. He and DH shoveled some packed snow and gave it a bit of a push and I drove it up to his house and in his driveway. Once it started moving I wasn’t going to stop! At that time we had about a foot already. Poor SB was up overnight shoveling snow at the hotel. He was still wired at the end of his shift but hoping to settle down enough to sleep a while. They only have 1 maintenance guy there right now, one snow blower and 2 shovels. Guess what he’ll be doing when he’s not sleeping… He has another official shift tonight overnight, so he’ll pretty much be eating, sleeping, and shoveling. He said he only had 2 walk in guests during the storm (this was by 7:30 this morning). There were 16 guests, half or more being employees staying over. Thank goodness they have that option! Not sure when it will be safe for him to travel home yet. The snow is not to taper off until sometime between 4 and 8 pm. One important casualty this morning, our snow blower died! We are now relegated to old school shoveling, unless DH takes our next door neighbor up on the offer of her snow blower. We’ll see. DD helped him clear the rest of the driveway after it died.
Tonie, thank goodness for that nice neighbor of yours. I hope he can help keep your path open. How are the animals faring?
Donna and Tonie, snuggle up and keep warm!
    Take care, everyone.

      • LYN….STAYED SNUGGLED UP, DON’T GO OUT IN THE BLASTED STUFF ONLY IF YOU HAVE TO, AND DON’T GO OUT BY YOURSELF…..PLEASE, DON’T WANT TO HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT YOU…….X

    • I’ve lived through a few of those types of storms and very happy not to have to deal with this one. Neighbors helping each other out is how we’ve always managed just like you and your family helped your neighbor. I worry more about Tonie and the rest living south that don’t have the winter road equipment to dig everyone out like we have in the north. (We get much more winter than most at the same latitude with the great lakes) stay warm everyone

      • I know, Laura, been thinking about Tonie all day. Tonie and my son. After shoveling all night, he slept a little and has been shoveling all day. He works again tonight. I’m thinking he may not be able to get home again until Monday. We’ll see.

      • I worry about your DS’s back too. He may need some chiropractic/acupuncture when the roads clear. Definitely will need rest. Bless him for being a great worker.

    • Lyn,
THe animals are doing fine. Chickens are snug in their house. Horses have a big fur coat to keep them warm and are eating hay like crazy. I had to wade thru the new snow to get down to my sisters to feed the cat. It was almost up to my knees. What a workout ! Took me about 45 minutes to feed and water everyone tonight. But that is okay, getting tired of sitting around. According to the weather, we will have warm weather next week with rain on Tuesday, so a big muddy mess. Enjoy to prettiness while you can.
      Stay warm
      Tonie

      • TONIE…PLEASE BE CAREFUL, A WORKOUT IS ALL WELL AND GOOD, BUT IF YOU SHOULD FALL????? I KNOW I AM A WORRY GUTS, BUT ITS ONLY COS I CARE, WHAT WOULD YOUR FM DO IF YOU GOT LAID UP?
MAKE THE MOSTOF THE MILD WEATHER WHEN IT COMES….LOVED THE PHOTO YOU PUT ON F/B OF THE HORSES. XX

  37. Dear friends, I have had each of you in the East and South in my mind all day. Lyn, I am also concerned about your son’s neck and back with all that shoveling but know you are proud of his dedication. Heat pad here he comes…Glad you got your snow blower working. Certainly sounds like you truly need it. I hope the snow stops for you very soon. Poor Sadie..wanting to romp but quite unable. I just saw a reporter disappear into the snow in NY while being urged to make a snow angel. Humorous incident but very graphic as to the amount of snow you all are having fall upon you. Glad you are safe and will be thinking of SB.
Tonie, I am pleased to learn for sure you have water and hope it all stays safe and that your electricity will stay on. Surely Judy’s cat could do with some dry food for a couple of days, couldn’t he? I am so sorry to hear about your FM and all they are going through in Europe right now. It’s all such an awful invasion and causing so much danger and eruption for millions. One wonders what will eventually be done. I know it did you well to hear from him and undoubtedly he is concerned for you. Stay safe my dear friend.
Donna, I hope you are safe and sound and not getting any more of the storm than you stated.
Jennie, I hope you are soon able to obtain some peace in this whole situation with your son. Thinking of you, Fondly, Sue

  38. Well hope all on East Coast still safe and warm
Apparently it’s on it’s way to the UK but in the form of rain and floods.,hitting the west Tuesday with 8 ins rain forecast and gales . Unfortunately it’s where they had the floods before .
They say on the news here that they managed to stop planes dropping chemicals and crashing on several cities here.how they stopped them I don’t know. Intelligence I suppose ….
    frightening
    Chris

    • CHRIS,,,,ITS FRIGHTENING FOR THOSE POOR FLOOD VICTIMS, THEY HAVE NOT RECOVERED FROM THE LAST LOT YET, WHEN WILL IT END, I AM SO CONCERNED FOR THEM ALL.
SO MILD HERE TODAY, IS IT THE SAME FOR YOU…SEEMS THE WORLD’S CLIMATE HAS GONE BONKERS FOR ALL OF US WHEREVER WE LIVE.
I DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE PLANES BEARING CHEMICALS, NOT BEEN ON OUR NEWS….HOW AWFUL
      HAVE A GOOD SUNDAY…..XX

  39. Yep it’s mild here today..people out
It was on the front of the Sunday express..saw it on the news discussing front pages
They intercepted them after the Paris attacks but didn’t put it out…I think they overheard the chatter with pilots..so I gather..Ipswich was one place and Bath then two others
    Chris

  40. Oh I just posted and it’s gone somewhere ..
Well ..yep it’s mild here people out enjoying it
It was on the front page of Sunday express..they were talking about it on TV . The raf intercepted them..they overheard chatter as they call it…Ipswich and bath and two other places were involved.it was after the Paris attacks and they kept it secret
    Worrying
    Chris

  41. Try a second time on this….
I know why I spelt the email odd

So yep it’s mild here people out enjoying it
It was on front page of the Sunday express..they were talking about it on TV
The raf intercepted them. They overheard some chatter as they call it..Ipswich,Bath and two, other places were the targets
It was after the Paris attacks and they kept it quiet
    Worrying

    • Chris, you’re so on…it is frightening. We need someone to eliminate all of those monsters. That’s a little too close not to be scary. I can see why they didn’t want people to panic. Oh dear. I hope we get some new folks in our government who will do something…almost anything would be better than denial like we have now.
Hope you don’t get a lot of the weather or rain like they’ve had snow in the East and South. Life just stopped for so many people. It was thankfully predicted so most had warning to get out and stock up. It’s all over the news today as kids sled on capitol hill in DC. Interesting and wonderful how children can usually enjoy snow when the adults are faced with the work involved in digging out. How sad if all of the folks over there who just got flooded get it again. Is that in York? Terrible. Hope you’re sleeping right now and will read this later..Love, Sue

      • Nope not sleeping here I am
I think York will be involved but it seems more west than that tho…but it’s changing
Sitting here with my wheat bag on my tum
It’s quite warm here today was 15c ..can’t work out what that Is In real money!
Feel hungry but not sure what to eat at 11pm…..
Should get my urine and swab test back early next week..
        How you feeling sue
        Chris

  42. Chris, Jennie, our news here has been tied up with blizzard news so I’ve not heard much about what’s going on over there. It is frightening. As to the oncoming weather, this saddens me. I can only hope it will somehow lose it’s punch before hitting. I know I am thankful we only had snow to deal with. FB was flooded yesterday with images not only of snow from the storm, but flooding along the coast. I’d much rather deal with snow than water.

Tonie, glad to hear the chickies and horses are doing fine. I do worry about animals in such weather and low temps. Be sure to rest between feeding trips, and take them with care. We’d all hate for anything to happen to you. Ugh regarding the mud to come. 😦 Did the storm bring record snow amounts your way? It did here. It was so hard to measure with all the blowing and drifting, but I think I saw 30″ or so posted for our area. That’s a lot of snow.
Yes, folks, our road has been plowed and our driveway is cleared. I’ve not heard from SB since early this morning. At that time he wasn’t sure if he’d be home today or staying one more day at the hotel. I imagine it depends upon employee availability. DD helped with snow removal here last evening, this morning DH and I worked together and joined and were joined by other neighbors each helping the other. Now it is time to rest, as I hope Tonie and Donna and everyone else who was snowed upon is doing. My prayers go out to those dealing with flood waters. I can’t even imagine. Prayers also headed across the big pond.

    • Lyn
Well they managed to stop it all this time lyn. ..evil
Rest yourself now after all that effort.and I pray SB has not hurt himself and is ok and enjoying it all as only young folks can..
Hope it has all stopped now for you ,the news on TV was horrendous but saw the Panda in the snow at the zoo..wasn’t he lovely
      Chris

  43. Watching an intriguing film ..the hours with meryl Streep .if I don’t fall asleep..hope I stay awake to see it all
    It’s 0.30 nearly..
    Anyone see it ?
    Chris
