SHOPPING FOR COMPASSION

SHOPPING FOR COMPASSION

My shopping cart is littered with ads

Some torn and wasted,

Left behind by harried customers

Much like me.

I pull my shopping list from the pocket of my jacket,

It is as usual: eggs, milk and bread and yogurt

Inevitably to be accompanied by fifty items

I did not plan to buy, but will.

As I look around at the microcosm of humanity

Which is nestled here in this retail world

I wonder at the variety of food, tastes and people

I see and feel less lonely.

Some are easy to read,

Their faces filled with joy while others

Are clearly having trouble pushing their shopping cart;

Much like me.

I have joy and am smiling

But I also feel each movement of my body.

Age and ability to shop are not always relative

As some of the young

Have a passel of vigorous children

Harassing their young mothers, others not so young.

As a grandma, I find it all fascinating, yet also overwhelming,

Wondering where my vigor has gone.

Did I really survive those years

With small children and loaded shopping carts?

Yet it seems only yesterday.

As my mind is brought back to the present

An exhausted young mother pushes a super cart,

Loaded with scuffling children,

Canned goods and sweetened cereal,

Frustration and maternal pride

Compete for her emotions

On her chubby, flushed pink face.

Two elderly gentlemen

Swap health stories,

Each taking his blood pressure

At a machine outside the pharmacy

While a bored pharmacist

Too tired to be rude, smiles stiffly

And prays for the end of her shift,

Shifting from one sore foot to the other.

In the outdoor nursery

A green refuge from the retail boredom within

New life quietly grows.

Unable to resist

I pick up a bright red geranium

For my kitchen window ledge.

In the toy department

A lone child,

Separated from his mother

Works at destroying a toy

He’s afraid he will never own.

Meanwhile, a studious gentleman

Gazes over the rim of his glasses

Searching through the new paperbacks,

Seeking a life

Between the covers of a book.

A mid-age couple,

Recently struck by illness

Shop the health food aisle

With its promise to live forever.

If only they knew

Which vitamin or herb to take

As they seek the magic bullet.

A seasoned housewife

Picks among the produce

Seeking only the best,

Measuring the importance of life

For her family’s health, one cabbage at a time.

A young bride touches the linens,

Terry towels soft with first lint,

Sheets with their promise of sensuality

The wonder of her future in her eyes.

As her nesting instincts

Long dormant now come alive,

She wanders into the infants wear

Guided by her dreams

As her heart ascends to the next step of life.

I gaze in sweet identification

As I listen to each voice,

Each of us singing our own song,

Alone and yet together

We sing our melodies of daily bread,

Healthy or ill, in pain or not,

We share this ordinary experience of life.

  1. Great sue
Like I was just saying before on the other blog .amongst people in your own isolation and yet somehow drawing strength from being with them
Everyone has there own story and we see our life’s reflections in them if we care to look…the stages of our life too. Nostalgia ..it’s got a lot to answer for!
I do like people watching I do it all the time…
And. The next shopping trip is going to be much more interesting now….

    Jen how are you there?
    Chris

    • Yes Chris, it is along the same theme you were talking about. We gain so much from others in wisdom, compassion and sharing. When we become isolated, it is life sucking and takes so many of us to a dark and lonely place. Strength comes from sharing other lives with our own. I find I often get far too dramatic and egocentric about my own problems and one day when I was at the mall, many years ago, when we lived where there was a mall, this whole idea occurred to me when I realized I was doing it. Many stories out there. I think that’s why I like magazines like GUIDEPOSTS so much.
Now that you’re back home, is it terribly hot? We didn’t get as much heat as I had feared which is always welcome. Just a few open doors and a couple of fans kept me comfortable today. Prayers and thoughts for you as you deal with your Dad’s problems this week. Love, Sue

  2. Really enjoyed this blog Sue. I like to people watch too Chris. My next shopping trip will be interesting because I will think about this blog. Great Job Sue! I only shop for about 10% of our groceries now as I can’t get my arms up high enough to be comfortable leaning on the handle bar to the grocery cart. My husband does the other 90%. I use my walker that has a seat on it and it is perfect for me. I know how to really pack it well. When I get to the cashier, she and people around me are wondering how I am going to get it back on there after it has been bagged up. It can be hilarious at times but I always do it. I really feel blessed that so many people want to unload my walker and then want to help me put it in the car. Depending on how I feel, I will let them sometime so I don’t rob them of being a blessing to me. I know God wants us to be blessings to others. I can’t help but think about how strong all of you are that write and share on this blog. Each one of us are battling our individual chronic illnesses. Some days are good and some days are bad but we continue to March on each day. We pray for each other and encourage each other and I don’t know about you, but I know that is what keeps me going. The day I found this blog was one of the best things that has happened in my life. I felt all alone and now I know I am not. I don’t have to try and explain my aches and pains because all of you feel like I do. So thank all of you who have been together for so many years for allowing me to come in this group and join you. I know it has been close to 3 years since I met all of you, yet it feels like I have known you all of my life. You will never know how much you all mean to me. I had just lost my best friend from breast cancer and I was in a bad way emotionally. I stayed in the bed pretty much for 6 months and then one day I was at my computer and found this blog and my life has been changed forever! Thank you, thank you so much. I look forward to seeing what everyone has shared each day when I get up. Some days it is hard for me to write because of my fingers and the RA but I read everyday. LOVE YOU all very much! Since I have been so long winded, I will write more later. Donna

    • Donna, I think others helping you is part of the circle of compassion that this alludes to. Sharing the good feeling that others get from helping you is just as important for them as it is for you to share or help another. You are always so kind to all of us and this acceptance you feel makes me feel like all of those blogs I’ve written over the years is worthwhile. Thank you for that.
Just remember you sharing with us is also of great value dear friend. Love, Sue

  3. Love this, Sue. Brilliant- introspective and yet connected at the same time. It’s amazing how just a smile, or just watching people can break us out of our isolation and gloom.

    • Annie, how are you doing? So much going on in your life. Hope you’re finding little clouds of peace each day in all the chaos. Yes, Isolation and gloom can go hand in hand. Love, Sue

  4. Dear Sue, Another good one. I noticed that there were several new people on some of your earlier posts and wished to welcome them. You are so good at reaching out and gathering us all together, all so different and yet so alike, thank you. Love, Janet

    • Janet, whenever I hear the Texas weather reports I think of you and my son and his family. Hope you’re not suffering from the current heat and humidity to a great extent. How’s it going for you these days? I know it’s hard for you to type and we all understand.
I wish all the folks that post remarks on FB would post on here also just so you all could get to know each other. Unfortunately, not everyone wants to be on FB. I understand about technology fears and intrusion. It’s such a different world isn’t it? However, dear friend, we all still have so much in common. Love you and hope you’re doing okay. Sue

    • Jennie, Indeed it is a sad world far too often these days. It’s as if the inmates are running the asylum. So many innocents being hurt or killed. It is a time for our faith to be stronger than ever as good can always defeat evil.
I am pleased to hear you have found the cause for your misery. I hope those meds work very quickly and you feel better, better than you have in a long while, very soon.
I hope you enjoyed the blog and my eye view of life. It does help each of us to reach out and remember we are all members of a very large family. Get well, okay? Love, Sue

  6. WHAT A FABULOUS BLOG SUE! I ALSO LOVE TO PEOPLE WATCH. DON’T DO IT OFTEN BECAUSE WE LIVE SO FAR FROM A MALL OR ANYTHING REALLY BUT WHEN I DO GO GROCERY SHOPPING I GET THAT CHANCE. IT REALLY IS A BLESSING TO GET OUT AND SEE OTHER PEOPLE. I ALSO LIKE TO CHAT WITH SOME OF THEM.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL. THANK YOU SUE FOR MORE TO THINK ABOUT. AS DONNA SAID NEXT SHOPPING TRIP I ALSO WILL THINK OF THIS BLOG.
    LOVE TO ALL XXX

    • Suzanne, it is always so good to hear from you because I’ve missed hearing how you’re doing. Hope you give us an update soon. I have often wondered not just about you but also wondering if you’ve been able to plant all those starter plants outside, into the ground. I sure hope so after all the work you and DH did. Watching things grow…nothing like it.
Did you ever get spring weather? You have much to update all of us about your life. Hope you’re doing okay. Love, Sue

  7. Hi all
Sue wonderful observations. Sadly I find myself rushing thru the store not really noticing a lot. Aggravated when people block the aisles while you stand and wait until you realize they are not going to move.
When I get more time to be normal again. I will get back to my watching
Ms Alice had one of her spells on me this morning. Sorta like a seizure. I just held her and prayed til it passed. She goes back to the dr tomorrow. So hope something can be done.
Donna we are glad you found us also. Jennie glad you are on the road to recovery. Chris prayers for the hearing today that it goes your way. Janet. We do miss you but know you are there. Ra checkup went fine yesterday. And blew my diet with a peach milkshake with the kids. Love to you all
    Tonie

    • Tonie, That must have been frightening for you and Ms. Alice. So, she is still being tormented by mini-strokes? Poor woman. She is fortunate to have your care and love there for her.
Hope life is falling into place for you as you get used to having the grands in your life and hopefully, are getting settled into your new home. Thinking of you, Love, Sue

      • Sue
Ms Alice doesn’t act right today. So unfocused. She knows me but is talking nonsense doesn’t look like she came back from this one as good
Well swapped my oldest granddaughter for two boys (sigh) the lack of resting time is trying. Working and caring for them is telling on me. But. So glad they are with me.
I still have quite a bit to do but little at a time. Found an ac unit to fit my window. Getting it tomorrow. Must put up the back porch. Clean up the back yard. But the boys and Devin will help
So glad your pt is helping think of you often and pray for you daily

  8. Hi Sue, and all Sue followers/friends, I’m hoping my comment comes through. Maybe I figured this WordPress out! I wait for your writings Sue, like waiting for my favorite magazine to come in the mail! Shopping for compassion is an awesome read; can only speak for myself but I know I’m a people watcher. My thoughts when I’m observing is what’s going on in their mind? What is their life like? I know God made us with a plan, a purpose. I don’t know how he decides who we’ll be. Sometimes jealousy enters my mind, and I quickly try to force it out. Who knows, maybe Angelina Jolie woke up feeling exactly as I did! Other times, I see people so impoverished or sick I’m so, so thankful that I am who God made me. Pain and limitations aside, I have a great life. My son is getting married August 15th, so excited. He expressed to me a few weeks back his concern on me being “okay” to attend. Crazy man, like I’d miss it!! But I do pray and ask that I’ll be okay through the weekend activities. My ability runs around one hour 😁, so any extra prayers are always appreciated! My daughters blessed me with 5 grandchildren, 3 through marriage and 6 year old twins! Love them, they light up my life like little else.
Shopping for compassion reminds me that I am who I am for a reason; that I don’t know the journey of the people I ponder about. It reminds me how grateful I am. Excited already for next weeks writing! I hope everyone has a blessed day and thank you Sue, for the reminder!

    • lbmarden, I’m sorry but I don’t know what to call you. It’s always wonderful to hear from a new voice who may have been reading for awhile. Your life sounds so very much like many of ours and the blessings and limitations also much the same. I’m sorry you are limited to such a great extent but also understand it, completely. Sounds like you are blessed with a loving family. You’re right, of course, there is nothing quite as wonderful as the hugging arms of a grandchild and twins? Just doubles the love.
I wish I could still publish this blog each week but had to cut back last year and publish only every other week now due to my own health issues. Look forward to hearing from you again. Are you on my facebook page?
Take care and live your life with as much joy as you can find. Sue P.S. You might want to remove your email address from the published pages and log in with it and call yourself by your first name on here for your own privacy.

      • Hi Sue, my name is Lori. I’ve made your recommended changes (hopefully). I am on Facebook with you and yes, I’ve so enjoyed reading your blogs.
I’m 51 years old, live in the beautiful state of Colorado, and suffer with chronic pain due to a failed multiple level cervical fusion. The surgery also resulted in my neck fusing with significant kyphosis. Pain is a constant in my life, and exacerbated by simply holding up my head or trying to turn my neck. Specialists have indicated no correction is available so I’m learning a new way of life!! It’s been a year and eight months since my surgery and one year since I had to resign from my hard earned and beloved career. I know you and others relate. I was in a dark place when I found your blog; I cherish life but was battling with some depression and therapy wasn’t cutting it. I find so much common ground with you and your friends, you’ve helped me know there are people out there that “get it”. So I thank you, I look forward to having friends that know that what we feel isn’t always visible on the outside, but it’s real. Have a good night and I appreciate your reply!

  9. well all
Short post as am soo tired
The assessment went on for 21/2 hrs with a team of three.pages to fill in called different domains
    Severe high moderate low etc
Some upsetting to go thru. some I didn’t agree on and eventually they saw it as I did.but they were very kind. And it looks like he will get thru for funding. It could be a home or at his home.when they would almost be with him .but I think a home mite be better as they do.but they can’t make him..but with that funding he could afford a nice one so we’ll see .they will pass it then it goes to a panel but they more or less agree they said…so we will know mid next week.apparently they will view him on some thing over the next two days
So its blimmin hot here all windows open and fans on gonna be a hot nite
    Donna
Not long till you go to see your DD.how is the pain?
    Suzanne good to hear you
Thank you all for your prayers on this.dunnit make life easier!?
    Inmarden
    Good to hear from you
Well I just mite sleep tonite
    Chris
    Oh Lynn how are you?

    • Hi Chris, Sounds like you are making progress and it is indeed taking a toll on you. It does sound better for your Dad. We had a similar situation with Jim’s uncle because Jim was his last relative and he found a beautiful board and carre home where they only had four patients in a private home. Is there anything like that in your area?
Hope you can sleep in the heat. How about a bowl of ice in front of one of those fans in your hot bedroom or even an ice pack for you. I have even put ice cubes in a bra and/or used damp towels which cause evaporation cooling. Stifling heat makes one want to sleep outside like we did as kids, huh? Well dear, one obstacle completed. Now you and all of us who care about you wait. How’s DH? Love, Sue

      • Hi sue
        Seen this after I posted
Got windows shut now for the insects with lights on. But good idea I forgot about the ice cube thing..I will have a go when I finish this
There are various homes around here am going to have a look at some ,but I have my eye on one nice one
Well we slept outside in our other house one hot summer..when we were both healthier! And we were not so young!
Oh dear it was still uncomfortable tho..but fun..had a BBQ for breakfast
We used to years ago have a boat that was great sleeping out..oh dear think of the difference now and the years gone by!
Gonna try the ice cubes in my bra now…gonna have to put one on then! But it will be nice and cold in bed
        Chris

    • Hi Chris, sounds like things are starting to come together for your dad. I hope the reports are right. Kind of confusing right? I pray that you will be able to get him somewhere nice. Like Sue said, maybe once he sees how nice it is maybe you can convince him to go. Especially if it is being paid for. That should make him happy and remind him of his safety issues. Will be praying. Yes, it is getting close to time for me to go to my DD. My plans are to have the car packed and ready tomorrow night except for a few things I have to wait to put in there until I am ready to leave. I have an appointment on Thursday morning at 9:30 AM to get my hair done then pick up some prescriptions right after that and I will be on my way. It takes about an hour and 40 minutes to get to my sister’s house. I will stay there a few hours and see how I feel. If hurting too badly or don’t feel like going any further, I will stay and spend the night at her house and get up early Friday morning and drive the remaining 2 hours. We will see. As long as I get there by sometime Friday I will be fine. July 4th is Saturday and I think they have some special things to do with me..I am not hurting too bad at all today. I did have to go out but it was not too hot and there was a breeze blowing. I haven’t even taken a pain pill today!
I did however have some very bad pains in my bowels today. Almost bent me over. Very painful. I really don’t need an IBS flare up now. It is gone away now since I went to the restroom. I will be reading and writing on the blog while I am on vacation.I just pray my RA and my fingers hold out. Chat with you later my friend. Hope you feel better soon. Get some rest. LOVE YOU.
To the rest, I will chat later or sometime tomorrow. LOVE all of you. Donna

      • Donna, please have a safe, measured and fun trip. SOunds like you’ve thought it all out. Be good to you dear friend. Love, Sue

      • Donna
        No pain pills ..magic
I do hope the IBS stays away for you.its sounds as if it was a one off tho….I hope you have had no more crampy pains.can you take anything just in case .mine started some weeks ago and if only I took something at the start I know it would have stopped it ,but I ignored it .however it seems to bs easing I think
It sounds like a wonderful time is planned all for you to have. Something good too look forward to
I’m glad you can post when away I was going to ask about that
Do have a lovely time and drive safely..I’ll be thinking of you. Take that rest at your sisters and enjoy that too
Prayers for a great time something great to remember
        Love chris

  10. Beautiful, Sue. I almost hated to read right on to comments because I wanted to just allow it to remain with me on its own merit.

Chris, glad it went well, although long. I’m ok, just dealing with RA fatigue thanks to the flare from procedures. Taking it easy, but hate seeing things that need to be done around here…

Jennie, glad you are to the bottom of it and hope treatment will help!

Annie, my thoughts and prayers remain with you. Very difficult, but wise decision about sweet kitty. I know you can find one that’s a better fit. I must say, not that you asked, but I agree with Sue. I do hope you might consider trying to find a better fit in your work life as well…

    Best, all!

    • Lyn, thanks for your kind remarks. Hope you are gaining strength with each passing day. Life is truly so much more complicated for most of us with rheumatoid disease. We get it. How’s your weather? Heat? Humidity? Do be good to yourself, okay? Love, Sue

      • Our temps have actually been a bit cooler, but yesterday was rainy. In fact, this is one of the rainiest Junes on record, I think. The next few days look clearer, though. It POURED here yesterday, but SB had no rain and he was landscaping very close to us. Don’t you love summer storm weather. He seems to be enjoying his job. However, when I talked with him, he said only a few remain on over winter. He’ll have to look for something else then, but he hopes to maybe be taking some classes then. He just doesn’t know what he wants to study. Still at that stalemate. I think DD will pursue RN in a local, excellent program, as long as she can afford it. Not sure when that start may be, maybe January? I hesitate to say it, but think I feel a bit more energy today. We’ll see if it lasts. πŸ™‚

    • Thanks Lyn. It was hard. The morning I took her back I tried to be really upbeat but I ended up crying most of the drive there. The kitty rescue lady was very kind about it and offered to keep me informed of her progress and her new placement when that time comes. I’m glad she will let me know- I think it will help me get some “closure”
I’m definitely keeping my ear out for different job opportunities that are less physically and mentally strenuous. I’m just beyond exhausted so much of the time – makes it hard to enjoy the little ones I care for.

      • So glad to hear this, Annie. And I’m so glad the kitty rescue will keep you informed of how she’s doing. Hugs!

  11. I forgot to tell you some important news
I rang for the biopsy results..they faxed them to the GP who I spoke to this morning
He said he didn’t understand them as it said the second biopsy was a basal cell one.he has had loads of those and we know they are not the rotten ones..so he said to get back to the surgeon so got onto sect,y ,she spoke to the plastic bloke and he said that’s what it says and he will write to the Dr,it looks like the first biopsy was wrong
I don’t fully understand the situation but if it’s this it is better news as they say it hasnt spread and is clear of the lymph nodes. Whether this was another one amongst the melanoma I dont know.but the good news is that he is referring him back to the dermatologist ,which he said he would only do if all was ok
So I will no more later but it seems good news
My Tum is no good ..DH bp..they split the dose to take am and pm see how that goes
    Jen
    Hope things easier now tomorrow
    Sue
How’s your IBS..is it hot with you,
    Chris

    • CHRIS, Perplexing biopsy results. Sure it’s possible there were two types of cancers growing next to each other. Basal cell will certainly spread but not to the internal organs like the malig. melanoma. I had a patient once who ignored a basal cell and it covered half his face and threatened his eyesight. The plastic surgeon yelled at him when he saw it and said, “What’s wrong with you man. Don’t you have a mirror?” I’m sure the docs will get it straightened out because pathology reports rarely lie. Sounds like you’ve spotted a lovely place for your Dad. Perhaps, once he sees it he will get excited about it or at least not be afraid of it. Poor man is at war with himself. Sounds like your heat is fierce. No, it’s not hot here. Just warm but always a breeze. Now DD and the kids did get hot in Portland yesterday and the temps are going up in there all week. Funny, just two hours away can make such a difference since we are closer to the sea and have our nice big river flowing out to it, letting all those breezes in.
Hope you rest tonight. Love, Sue

  12. Hi Sue, my name is Lori, thank you for the set-up tips. I hope I did them correctly! I am on Facebook with you and yes I’ve read your blogs.
To introduce myself, I’m 51 years old and I live in the beautiful state of Colorado. I’ve had chronic pain for years, and finally broke down and had multiple level cervical fusion, which failed. It didn’t fuse at one level and the level that did fuse, fused in a position that resulted in significant worsening of kyphosis. The specialists say there’s no correction, and I’ve seen several, so I’m learning a different way of life. My pain is constant and exacerbated by holding my head up or turning my neck. One year ago this month I had to resign from my hard earned career, I know you and many of your friends relate.
When I first found your blog, I was suffering from some depression and counseling/therapy wasn’t cutting it. Finding out there are others that get it, that understand “those days” is priceless. I had felt really alone; my illness/injury isn’t visible. So I thank you, I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone!

  13. Sue, beautiful blog …. thanks so much for sharing it with us!
We finally made it back to the lake but the packing up and cleaning and then getting settled again were very difficult for me this year! Life in general seems more difficult, but we must venture on, right? Two things to quickly tell you.

As you know, Connor, our special needs GS has been attending a wonderful school for children diagnosed as autistic. We have watched many students come and go at six months or maybe nine months as the waiting list is long and each child must show they are benefitting from the therapy or unfortunately they are asked to leave. When Connor began his parents were told that some students make it to a year, but to stay past twelve months is very unusual as they must show that they are greatly benefitting from the program, and very few have been kept past that point, so when his parents went to the twelve month meeting they believed they would be discussing his transition period to school in September (the school board had already decided to place him in a regular grade one class). To their surprise they informed that the administrators were “blown away” by Connor’s marks and that his achievement is very, very unusual. To stay in the program he had to increase his IQ from his last test by 8 points which his dad had told me was unrealistic to believe that Connor could do that, but he had surpassed that requirement. He has gone from being non verbal at Christmas to talking in sentences …. and letting us know all the wonderful information he has stored in his handsome little head! His comprehension is now 100%! He also has developed a delightful personality and the teachers at the school said they are enjoying his sense of humour and he often tries to be funny! His stay at the school has been extended until Christmas and if he reaches the goals on his learning plan he will be there another year, when at that time he will begin his transition to grade two! I can’t remember ever really crying from happiness in my life, but when my son told me this news the tears streamed down my face. His parents of course are over the moon! His grandfather has stayed for several observation mornings when his parents weren’t available and he said it is unbelievable how hard this wee five year old boy works. All the teaching is one on one …. and he loves going to school. He is also doing amazing art work which doesn’t surprise me as his mother was offered an art scholarship at university but decided to become an aerospace engineer, but she still likes to paint if she ever finds time. Neve, Connor’s little sister is thrilled to be stating Jr. K in September and she is having her first sleepover at the cottage without her parents in July … she is sooo much fun!

My other news is that our other son and DIL are expecting their fourth child (our SIXTH grandbaby) in September, and Ella their eldest is only five years old … their very busy life will be ever busier! I was looking at the baby toys the other day and thinking it was time to give them away … this was a BIG surprise! Time for bed!
Love and Prayers to all … Pommum Brenda

    • Oh Pommum Brenda, how wonderful that your eldest grandson is doing so well. I can only imagine how thrilled and emotional you must have felt. All the genes are there. It sounds like you just found the right school to unlock all of his ability and talent. Dear girl, I’m thrilled for you all. Congrats on the new grand coming your way. My yes, they are going to have their hands full. Also, they are going to have an abundance of joy.

I’m sorry life is so hard for you right now. It sounds like your back never really settled down and probably many other things are hurting. I think most of us on here who have so many problems can come close to understanding some of your suffering. I’ve been worried about you because you’ve been away much too long and I’ve missed you. So what wonderful projects does your talented, handy husband have planned for this summer at the cottage? I can’t believe all the changes and improvements you’ve made since buying it. How many years ago was that? I’m sure it’s been longer than we imagine. Time seems to be whizzing by. Please let us hear more when you’re up to it. Much love, Sue

    • Oh, Brenda! Your news of Connor has me in happy, happy tears! What a blessing! So, so happy for and proud of the little guy! And a new little grand on the way! Makes all the hardships easier, doesn’t it? What wonderful news!

    • Oh Brenda, I am so happy for you and Connor. I know it made your kids hearts soar when they got the good news ! I wish my grandson had gotten into a school like that. He still needs help and I intend to see he gets it if they settle here. He is quite the young man, but still needs help in life learning.
I pray you have a great summer at the cottage !! My hugs to Teddi !

  14. Sue

    • Jennie, You sound a bit better. It takes time. The pace should be be slow and steady wins the race, right? My own gut is doing better since I switched back to Metamucil each night in juice. Hate it but if it does the trick will glug it down.
Hope you’re resting up some from your Mom’s visit. Know that time took a lot out of you. Hope you get to standing taller very soon. Relieved it isn’t your spine.
I am sorry you are suffering from the heat so much. Must say we are fortunate in that regard. Only gets up in the 80’s out here maybe five times a summer, if that. I HATE the heat. At least with the cold and rain we can cover up but with the heat, there’s only so much uncovering that helps and that can get pretty scary. Please continue to improve dear girl. Be sure you’re taking your acidophiles for the antibiotic overkill. Love ya, Sue

  16. Nope Jen can’t even have a little one…daren’t
Well at shed for the nite..thought it would be cooler but it’s hotter today..so it’s 34c at the coast and it was 32c in the shed..so have opened the roof and everything but can’t open sunside too hot.
Just arrived and go back tomorrow .
    A bit of a break
I see princess Charlotte is being christened just down the road it’ll be busy here this Sunday
Ok gonna enjoy my iced elderflower now D H has a beer
Hope all ok in this heat
    How’s it with you Jen
    Be back
    Chris

    • CHRIS…….JUST MAILED YOU, SO WON’T REPEAT IT, GLAD YOU ARE AT THE SHED, A BIT COOLER FOR YOU, HAD A THUNDER STORM THIS MORNING, ABOUT HALF A DOZEN FAT DROPS OF RAIN AND THAT WAS THAT. HOPE YOU GET A BETTER NIGHT TONIGHT……LOVE JEN X

    • Chris, sorry the coast not cooler for you. How exciting having the baby princess christened so close to home. It must be so lovely where you live. Enjoy your night at the coast as much as possible. Hope you get a cool wind off the sea tonight. Love, Sue

  17. Lyn, strange summer weather. Sounds more like us here in Oregon. Good to hear SB is enjoying his outdoor job and hope something works out for the winter. Maybe he’d like to work at a garden supply, or something of that kind. Will he be in school this fall? I’m pleased to hear DD is thinking about nursing school. There are scholarships available. You might suggest she look into them. I know she’s been sort of interested in that field for a long time. Would love to see her bring it to fruition.
Glad you’re recovering from last week’s procedure. The prep for the darn thing as well as the meds can really fool with us. Do take care. Love, Sue

  18. Tonie, So where did your eldest granddaughter go? I know you must miss your privacy but it’s not like they’re going to live there forever. I’m so sorry to hear about Ms. Alice. Poor lady. This whole growing old business can really suck. I’m pleased you found an air conditioner for your new place. I love the casual way to say things like putting on the back porch. Did you ever get your hot tub fixed? Hope your sis is doing okay.
Yes, PT has helped my shoulder and operation site a great deal but not doing much for the back much to my disappointment. Have to live with the pain probably. Must get something done around here. Do take care not to overdo like you usually do. Love, Sue

    • SUe:
Hailey went down to stay with Sean a bit. She is going to earn money babysitting for them. She has been talking to me about wanting a boyfriend. She is 17 and has never had one. I just told her to be picky !! πŸ™‚
No, hottub is at the bottom of the list right now. Have to get a system for it that includes a heater.
Judy is doing okay. She went for injections in her back yesterday. I go next Monday week.
Hey I have a “passel” of kids with muscles to help me with the porch. Started cleaning up the back yard last night. Hoped to finish it tonight, but it looks like a rainy day is in store for us. Well I gotta run. (seems like this is all I am doing these days). Yes, I know they are not staying forever, but it still takes some adjusting when I am hurting and needing down time and trying not to speak too harshly to them.
Hope you all have a great day. Talk to you soon.
      Love
      Tonie

      • Tonie, sounds like you are still in the midst of a thousand projects. I’m glad the kids are there to lend muscle and moral support. Sounds like life is just jammed full of activity. Small wonder you get a bit frayed around the edges. Maybe a nice rainy day will allow you a bit of rest.
I hope Ms. Alice is getting some moral support from her family. How is your friend Millie in AZ doing. Haven’t heard you mention her in awhile. Hugs to Judy. Hope her back is better and hope and pray your injection goes well and is worth it. It’s quite a life, huh? We move from hope to hope and try to live our lives in between somewhere. Hugs to you always, Sue

  19. Hi, my name is Lori. I posted prior and Sue was kind enough to give me some pointers, such as letting you all know my name. I’ve tried replying to the welcomes from Donna and Lyn, not sure if they made it through or not. They show waiting approval. So if anyone knows what I’m doing wrong, help!! πŸ˜€. Sue, thank you for reaching out to me, it meant so much. So here’s my test comment. Fingers crossed because I’d really like to get to know you all. It. Reading your writings Sue, and your friends comments, I’ve found realization that I’m really not alone. And I can’t express how that has changed my life πŸ’œ

  20. WHEW SUCH A STORM WE HAD HEAR, AND WE ARE SENDING IT OVER TO CHRIS…SORRY MATE. MY LITTLE DOG GOT SO SCARED, AT 4-30 THIS MORNING, HE DIVED ON MY BED, THEN LAY ACROSS MY CHEST FOR TWO HOURS, NOT A GOOD POSITION FOR ME WITH A BAD BACK, BUT I SPENT TIME SINGING TO HIM….YES I KNOW I AM MAD, BUT HE WAS SHAKING LIKE A LEAF EACH TIME THE SKY LIT UP.

TONIE…I HOPE YOUR JUDY HAS SUCCESS WITH HER INJECTIONS, AND I PRAY FOR GOOD RESULTS FOR YOU NEXT WEEK.

SUE…YES I AM TAKING ALL THE STUFF YOU TOLD ME TO, MY BEDSIDE CABINET NOW RESEMBLES A PHARMACY….ITS BEEN IN THE NINETIES AGAIN TODAY AND SAME TOMORROW ……AND ITS SHOPPING DAY, I HATE SHOPPING IN THE HEAT, WE ARE NEVER SATISFIED ARE WE? I HATE THE COLD AND SEVERE HEAT…..GIVE ME A GENTLE 70 DEGREES ALL YEAR, THAT SHOULD DO IT.

IN CASE I DON’T GET ON HERE TILL SUNDAY….A VERY HAPPY 4TH OF JULY TO YOU ALL, MAY IT BRING PEACE AND BETTER HEALTH……………………..WITH LOVE….JENNIE XXXXXXX

    • Jennie, Awe yes, the perfect weather. If only these bodies would co-operate. I’m so sorry to hear Sacha got so frightened. I’m sort of dreading the 4th for that reason with our dogs. Jake is a little deaf so more worried about George but will put on his special huggy jacket to make him feel secure. THey’re great. Not as good as singing of course.
I am sorry you all had a sleepless night. I had to turn off some fans in the night as it always chills up around here later on. Just went out and watered and that is the third time I’ve watered this year but no complaints. Since it never rains on our porch I do haul water out to those plants almost daily. I hate to think how very much more lazy I would become if it weren’t for the daily chores of life driving me on. Hope you’re improving every day dear friend. Love, Sue

  21. Hi all, our newest friend here on the blog keeps getting “waiting moderation”. Do any of you tech whizzes know how to help her. Her name is Lori and she can read all of your comments but can’t get back in to answer and it’s frustrating. You know me…helpless when it comes to computers. Can anyone help? Thanks, Sue

    • HI SUE….I USED TO GET THAT, BUT IN THE BOXES UNDER “COMMENTS” THERE SHOULD BE “OPTIONS”, I SELECTED TO GO THROUGH FACEBOOK, SEEMS TO WORK FOR ME, BUT THINGS STILL GO WRONG AT TIMES, BUT ON THE WHOLE ITS GOOD…………..YES SACHA SURE DID AN ASS ABOUT TURN ON MY BED THAT NIGHT, THINGS SETTLED DOWN NOW, BUT OH MY THIS HEAT SAPS YOUR STRENGTH……MANAGED THE SHOPPING OK, AND CERTAINLY WALKING STRAIGHTER, BUT THE TUMMY PAIN JUST KEEPS ON COMING…….WILL GIVE IT OVER THE WEEKEND, THEN REVIEW THE SITUATION. GOOD LUCK WITH GEORGE, AND HIS LITTLE HUGGY JACKET…………SACHA HATES CLOTHES, BUT DOESN’T MIND THE ODD PILLOW SLIP DRAPED OVER HIM ON LAUNDRY DAYS….HE IS PURE THEATRE THAT ONE…HA HA! I KNOW I SAID IT BEFORE BUT EVERYONE ENJOY THE CELEBRATIONS TOMORROW AND STAY SAFE….LOVE JENNIE XXX

      • Jennie, Hope the tummy begins to calm down. What kind of a diet do they have you on? Aren’t our pets a source of joy to each of us? George loves clothes and if he isn’t in a sweater it’s a rare day out here where we live. After I put his head through a turtleneck he picks up his paws to go through the arm slots.
Glad you got to the store at least. Jim’s off today and the weather has cooled off nicely after a semi warm week here. Nothing like you and Chris have been having. Please continue to get better. Love, Sue

  22. Annie, I replied to you above, but in case you didn’t find it: So glad to hear this, Annie. And I’m so glad the kitty rescue will keep you informed of how she’s doing. Hugs!

  23. Hi friends, my plans have changed. I know all of you have been in the same situation. I came home yesterday and I was in so much pain with my back, legs and hip. I took a pain pill and put the heating pad on my back. I ate my supper and went upstairs to finish my packing. Once I got up there my breathing was horrible. I had my oxygen on. It took me 4 hours to sort through what I was taking because I had to stop and sit so many times. I finally said forget it I will do it in the morning. By that time I was hurting again. I got on my bed and got comfortable and went to sleep. I had to get my hair done at 9:30 and pick up my prescriptions. My original plans were to leave right after that because everything was going to already be in the car. Well as you know, that didn’t happen. I did get my hair done and pick up my scripts and was able to pay a bill. On the way home, I got so sleepy and my leg was hurting. On top of that my tummy was hurting and I felt like I was going to throw up. I knew at this point I was not going to be going today. I lay across my bed at noon and didn’t wake up until 4:30PM. Just about everything is ready now so hopefully I will be going early morning. Please keep me in your prayers. Thanks for your patience with me going on and on. LOVE YOU all very much. Donna

If I don’t get back on here tomorrow, I hope everyone has a great 4th of July! Holiday Saturday.

    • Donna, no patience needed. We all know how you feel and have had our struggles and disappointments, sometimes daily. I didn’t make it to PT this week at all and should have. Just take it as you must, a day at a time. I hope you get to take your trip but you must listen to your body and it’s warnings for your own good. Much love and hoping for your plan to be fulfilled. Love you, Sue

    • Oh Donna
Do you know it seemed a lot to get done before you went ,hair.. prescriptions ,I thort ooo that’s a lot to do for you.so maybe this way is better for the trip.i do hope you have recovered to do it .with all ready to go it sounds good..but if not ..never worry the time is right when it’s right..ok

  24. Hey all:
Sue , Millie and Bill are doing fine. You remember he had his knee replacement replaced ? It is much better this go around. Millie is busy being Millie. She still asks about you all even thought she can’t focus on the blog anymore.

And about to drop off as we speak. Hope you all have a blessed nght

    Tonie

    • Tonie, Glad to hear you are cooling off. Good news about Millie and Bill. Glad Bill’s knee is better this time around and Millie, well, like all of us she is aging. Sounds like you had a very busy one today. Rest well…Love, Sue

    Chris

    • Chris, oh dear. Too much heat. Remember to hydrate like mad. Worry about you. Glad you liked part of the nicer place for your Dad but sounds like his behavior will be a bit of a problem, especially if they think he needs to be watched so closely. Glad you put it down for the day and will take up the problem another day soon. Take care of yourself.
Glad you’ll be trying the nebulizer with assistance to see how you react. Hope you’re resting. Love, Sue

    • CHRIS….OH HECK WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT FOR YOU, I WAS SURE YOUR DAD WOULD HAVE LIKED THAT PLACE, IT LOOKED REALLY NICE, AND THE QUALITY OF EVERYTHING WAS SUPERB. HOW THE HECK DID YOU MANAGE TO GET HEATSTROKE SWEETPEA? NOT DRINKING ENOUGH, AND WORKING TOO HARD IN THIS HEAT I SUPPOSE…..WELL A DAY OFF TODAY FOR YOU MRS…….WE MIGHT NOT COME FROM THE GOOD OLD USA, BUT WE CAN STILL CELEBRATE THE 4TH OF JULY WITH OUR FRIENDS ON HERE CAN WE NOT?…………………..FOR ME ITS THE START OF THE TOUR DE FRANCE TOO, ITS STARTING IN UTRECHT HOLLAND THIS TIME….A PLACE I KNOW WELL…………….TAKE IT EASY MY FRIEND….LOVE YOU…JEN XX

  26. Well, I have officially used up all my spoons, the bottom has dropped out ! I am shut up in my room on the bed fixing to nap a while. We left intending to go to water aerobics this am, but there was a wreck on the interstate and the other road was backed up bumper to bumper. So I just took them to the river and let them play. I think they liked it better πŸ™‚ While we were there I just started getting so weak and tired, so came home , made lunch and dared them to bother me til I come out ! So have a great day all. And have a Happy 4th of July !!
    Love
    Tonie

    • Tonie, Saw all the pics of the kids at the river and they didn’t look one bit deprived. They should be a bit pooped after all the activity. Glad you made time and place for yourself. Saw Devin skipping rocks, the boys playing, etc. Looked like a good day for all. Now I hope you get some rest. Love, Sue

      • I did Sue, took a small nap then went and got some things done. Emptied another container ! YEAH !

    • TONIE……..YOU ARE OVER DOING THINGS, AND ITS TIME TO QUIT AND REST AWHILE…..THE KIDS LOOKED GREAT IN THE RIVER, WISH I COULD HAVE JOINED IN, TOOK ME BACK TO MY YOUTH, NEVER OUT OF THE RIVER. THE WORKTOPS YOU ARE DOING IN YOUR NEW HOME LOOK GREAT……HAVE A LOVELY DAY…..JENNIE XXXX

      • Thanks Jennie. I am bad about overdoing it, but I needed to get basic stuff done ya know ? Still resting is a part of the thing. And I have neglected it. We only had the river and creek to swim in. The kids loved it. I may take them again this week or maybe out to the creek, the river’s current is pretty swift and I don’t want any accidents.
Love ya, praying you are feeling better
        Tonie

  27. Hope you all have a good time over there today .
    Donna
I was thinking of you and I hope you were feeling better and able to leave on your trip.
    Chris

    • Thanks Chris:
Just curious, we see it in the movies, but does anyone in the UK still call America “The Colonies” ?

      • Well rarely. I can’t remember it ever being said..however i know they can refer occasionally to it collectively when inc. Oz in it as well…but more years ago than today
Hope you gonna rest and have a good time today
        Chris
Ps those pics when u got time x

    • Thanks Chris, nothing special planned here at the Wood household. Jim is off to the jail after we had a lazy morning of watching TV and after that he’s taking the day to wax his Camaro. I’m not feeling all that well…gut and some nausea, so plan on doing the minimum housework, straighten up my office a bit as it piles up quickly, and then rest. Made enough dinner last night for leftovers tonight so won’t have to work at it. Kids back from camp last night. Beth said they had traffic all the way with all the folks pouring out here to the coast from Portland for the holiday weekend.
Hope you’re at the beach house being lazy and restful. Hope you can put your troubles behind you for the weekend. Love ya, and thanks for the Fourth of July greetings. Sue

  28. SUE…….NO DIET…..JUST WATCH OUT FOR BERRIES AND NUTS, AND NO BROWN STUFF….BREAD, CEREALS OR ANYTHING THAT I WOULD TERM HEALTHY……..LIMIT ALL FRUIT EXCEPT APPLES…..GETTING FED UP WITH IT ALL, SO I TEND TO FOLLOW MOST OF THE RULES, BUT JUDGE FOR MYSELF IF THERE IS A FOOD THAT IS UPSETTING ME.
WHEW, WE HAD YET ANOTHER STORM IN THE NIGHT, AND ITS SO CLAMMY, ITS HARD TO DRAW BREATH, I WOULD GIVE A LOT TO BE BY THE SEA RIGHT NOW.
WELL I HOPE YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING WITH THE FAMILY FOR THIS SPECIAL DAY, AND GETTING SOME REST AS MUCH AS YOU CAN TOO……….HOW IS JIM NOW? NO MORE SKIN PROBLEMS?…………LOOK AFTER YOURSELF MY FRIEND…LOVE YOU………………JENNIE XXXXXXXXXXX

    • Jennie:
My sister has that stuff. But she eats a lot of breads, waffles and cereals. They don’t bother her. BUt peanuts, raspberries, sometimes strawberries and tomato seeds. She grows a type that has very few seeds and eats and cans them. Mostly she will clean out the seeds before eating the tomato. She says she is cleaning out the taste πŸ™‚
We had a lot of rain yesterday and last night as well. Very muggy today, but still overcast with chances of more rain all weekend. Hoping the kids still get to see the fireworks. Do take care of yourself.
      Love
      Tonie

      • THANKS TONIE….I TOO REMOVE THE SEEDS IN THE TOMATO, BUT YES I AGREE, ITS CLEANING OUT THE TASTE, I HOPE THE KIDS GET TO SEE THE FIREWORKS TOO, IT WILL BE GREAT FOR THEM…….ENJOY….XXXX

    • Jennie, you have just described the diet I am on almost everyday of my life. I do eat more fruit than you do such as oranges, grapefruit, yes also apples, cherries, peaches, nectarines, some grapes. When choosing yogurt which I eat in abundance I can only eat the peach or cherry or vanilla types. I also drink one bottle of Ensure or Boost each day. The yogurts and drinks are to keep me from having to take so many pills for the osteoporosis. I have only found one calcium pill I can swallow and the chewy ones are full of sugar and not good for the teeth. Oh what a complicated life so many of us lead. As far as the special diet, when I go off of it and will from time to time, I pay the price but gees, one craves certain foods. I definitely cannot eat much beef, do fine with chicken and fish, however. Last night I made Fettuccine Alfredo with cream cheese and beautiful fresh Crimini mushrooms and made enough for tonight. I can’t drink alcohol but do occasionally have a glass of wine or a cold beer. Because of the methotrexate and the gut all of that has to carefully monitored. Good thing with my Baptist background I’ve never been much of a drinker.
Jim is doing well. He will never be free of the fear of melanoma and gets checked every four months for that. He’s still working like mad and seems to enjoy it but of course, I worry.
I haven’t felt well for the last couple of weeks. Feels like a bug of some sort. My cardiac studies revealed an arrthymia that is not alarming but that is what I felt. We’ve had the air conditioner going all week during the day then get a lovely breeze each night. The night is full of tourists. There will be a fireworks show down on the river tonight and we hear it but don’t go down. It can be seen from the hill where we live and people park up here and sit in their cars if they’re trying to evade the traffic. I have George in his Thundershirt so he is all tucked up in a squeeze. We’ve had a few fire crackers go off outside but no reaction from him. Hope you continue to improve dear girl. Love, Sue

  29. HAPPY 4th of JULY !!!! God bless America ! I know we need it !
Hope you all have a great day whether with family and friends or just chilling out. I have to make breakfast for the minions in a bit. I like to cook for them on Saturday at least. Give them a good one instead of cereal.
I watched one of the better movies I have seen in a while last night. No special effects, no sex scenes. Just good script and acting. “Pictures and Words” . Even my granddaughter watched it with interest. We even got into a discussion about art.
I am going to bake a cake to take to my brothers later on today, and mostly I am going to rest. I know I will have to ride if the weather holds, cause gd is chomping at the bit, as it were. I promised we would ride Red. She has been grooming him, learning how to take care of horses. SHe is doing a great job. So much like me at that age.
Well take care all, have a lovely blessed day no matter what you are doing.
    Love
    Tonie

    • Tonie, it is so interesting that you mentioned the film WORDS AND PICTURES. I love Juliette Binoche and just rented it last week and liked it so much I watched it on the on demand on our cable. For all of you who have not seen it it is about an artist/teacher who has RA and a cantankerous alcoholic who challenges her that words are mightier than pictures and they battle then of course, it gets romantic. It’s very good. I couldn’t help but wonder if Binoche actually has RA or not. It was made a couple of years ago so I think it’s interesting that you and I would find it about the same time. Of course, we had to watch 1776 yesterday. I love that movie. It manages to be funny, educational and entertaining all at once. Well worth the watch and the music is wonderful.
Read about your breakfast for the locusts/children and it sounded so good. Looks like you’re going to have to serve yourself first if you’re not going to starve. How cute the kids are. Hope you and Devin got your ride in today. They are having so many wonderful experiences and will grow so much from being near to you and being in your beautiful VA. Hope Nikki is planning and making progress on her move down there. Do the kids talk to her often? Bet she misses them, if at meals if at no other time. Just kidding but bet it has helped her budget.
Sure hope you continue to exert your right to rest when needed. How’s the back porch coming along? You’ve come such a long way. Thinking of you and hoping you’re dry, sunny but not too humid and enjoy your Fourth. Love, Sue

      • Sue:
Yes, Nikki is missing them. And she is wiring me grocery money today ! She talks to them everyday or so. Nathan especially misses her. And his Dad, he talks about him all the time. AND Ellen Degeneres. He is OBSESSED with her. He watches her on youtube, on tv and is driving me nuts. Autistics get really into one or two things. He has been going to Judy’s and watching Willy Wonka, over and over. πŸ™‚ Ahh the perils of Keekee. But I see my horses out my window and life is grand. We didn’t get to ride yesterday. Had to rest and too much going on. The fireworks were awesome. I so enjoyed being with them but we stayed up much too late and we are dragging this morning.
I think it is cool how we click on the same movies around the same time. πŸ™‚ I thought that was just a great film, found it on Amazon Prime. Tomorrow is the 2nd injection on my back. Speaking of which, no progress on the porch yet. However we did get the back yard cleaned up of debris and found a snake in the process. Sadly to say, he is no longer with us ! Much screaming and carnage with gutter downspouts and hoes were seen.
It is still overcast here, not sure what this is all about but the humidity is gruesome !
Hope you are doing well. WHen I get a chance to breath we must chat !!
        Love ya
        Tonie

  30. Tonie

YES A GREAT SHAME DAD DIDN’T WANT TO GO THERE, BUT I KIND OF GET THAT…..ITS YOU I WORRY ABOUT, IT MEANS ONCE AGAIN THERE ID NO LET UP TO YOUR DUTIES, IS THERE?
I HOPE THIS WEEKEND IS OK FOR YOU, AND THAT YOU ARE NOT TOO HOT AND YOU ARE BY THE SEA….LOVE JEN X

  31. Hi everyone, Guess where I am at? My daughters!! I made it!!! I woke up
later than I wanted to and my husband had to still put the rest of my luggage and bags in my van. We got it done. He prayed for me and I left at 11:10 AM. 15 minutes later it started raining so hard I thought I was going to have to pull over and stop because I couldn’t see to drive. I made it to my sister’s house and we w
    L0l”

    • Ok, now to finish my post as my Kindle decided to end me. My sister and I had lunch and as we were h by attempting to put my walker in the van it started pouring down rain. We had to forget it, shut the doors and go back inside to wait it out. We were both soaking wet. I went back to my sister’s house and stayed for several hours until it stopped raining and storming. lstill had 2 hours left toppllpgo. I only stopped once. All this time I didn’t have any back pain. I did however start to have some leg pain about 40 filed fro j l?

      • Started having leg pain about 40 miles from my daughter’s. Stopped for about 30 minutes and continued on. Got here and we ate supper and came back to the house and Kim and I sat on the deck around the pool in her new porch swing all night! It was so peaceful. I was so relaxed. Not too much pain today. I have been laying around dozing. We are going out later to see what is going on around town and see the fireworks. I have been playing with the dogs and giving them treats. My daughter’s dog, Milo is a full blooded black lab. Her friends dog is a black lab chow mix. Except for his head he looks like Milo. His head is a little smaller. His name is Winston. The other dog is a beautiful brown pit bull named Blaze. I love them so much. I am going to stop for now. Will take some pictures and post them. Have a great weekend. LOVE YOU, Donna

      • HEY DONNA….TICKLED PINK YOU GOT TO YOUR SISTER’S DESPITE ALL THE DIFFICULTIES…..PRAYED FOR AN ANGEL TO HELP GET YOU THERE, SO I WILL REMEMBER TO SAY THANK YOU FOR LISTENING…YOU SOUND TO BE HAVING A GRAND OLD TIME WITH THE FAMILY AND ALL THE DOGS……HAVE FUN BUT DON’T WEAR YOURSELF, AND SAFE JOURNEY FOR WHEN YOU COME BACK….YES LOTS OF PHOTO’S PLEASE….LOVE YOU…JENNIE XX

    • Donna, Hurray. So pleased you got to go on your trip. Hope all is well with your daughter and so pleased you’re doing well. Sounds like you did get a bit of a dunking from the rain. Enjoy yourself. Love you, Sue

  32. Happy 4th of July, all! Thank you for thinking of us from across the pond πŸ™‚ I just caught up on the latest here.
    Donna, glad you made it!
Chris and Jennie, keep taking care of yourselves…
Tonie, enjoy your ride with GD!
I will keep it brief here as I am once again battling fatigue and flare. 😦 Unfortunately, just as I was coming out of the last bout kicked off by my procedures, my DD ended up in the hospital for a day and 2 nights. Short story, her blood count was VERY low. She got a blood transfusion and lots of fluids. She’s still not up where she needs to be, but on meds to help get her there and will follow up with doc and further tests to fully check everything out. None of us slept the first night but a few hours. Lack of sleep, etc. kicked off the RA fatigue and flare again. It doesn’t help that we had a rainy morning. It is clearing off now, thankfully. We’ll see how it goes. Pup is sleeping now, but will need a walk. Not sure if I will be able to go along or not. I like the idea of exercise, but feel like I could fall asleep at the drop of a hat, not to mention aches and such. No news to anyone here. Fading fast. Take care, all! Those celebrating today, enjoy!

    • Dear Lyn, What a stressful time for DD and for you. Hope you both mend, heal and feel better with each day that passes. Have a nice lazy, quiet Fourth. Pray the fatigue passes and the RA settles down with rest. Love to you and DD, Sue

    • LYN……OH NO! SO SORRY TO HEAR YOU HAVE SLIPPED AGAIN WITHOUT FULLY RECOVERING FROM THE LAST LOT……YOUR DAUGHTER SOUNDS LIKE SHE IS GETTING EXCELLENT TREATMENT, SO TRY NOT TO WORRY LOVE, JUST CATCH UP ON YOUR SLEEP, THE WORST IS OVER…THINKING OF YOU….LOVE JENNIE XX

  33. Donna
So pleased you made it…take it easy and no speeding on the beach!
Hope you will be on from getting wet
    Lyn
My goodness you’ve had a time off it. I hope DD picks up now.is that something she has from time to time?
Sounds like continuing rest is inorder for you
    Sue
Sounds like a lazyish day for you.i wish you could get over this nausea
    Jen
Nope not at shed…got this nebuliser appt on Monday and have to I see my dad tomorrow.had him moved rooms last nite.he said this man wandered over to him took glasses off him in the nite.he also mentioned the nite befor…I didn’t know…that this same man had taken his shirt and peed in it. So I looked and it was gone he says to be laundered…. he was put in a bay off four recently……so I went and said I hadn’t been told and my dad is frightened he can’t move to protect himself . ( all this could be In My dads imagination…but why was his shirt in the laundry…he is not wearing clothes at moment
Anyway he was scared so I asked him to be moved and they put him in a single room. My dad was sleeping with his personal stuff in his bed
Also two enemas and no go…oh dear the list goes on….the sister was a bit rigid and wouldn’t listen to start with. But I explained I WASNT LeAVING and would stay….so nicely….and it worked
Anyway it’s been hot here again
AND I had a itch to make scones….and in this heat..”so I did..not very good with sweet stuff as you know and they were ok…..so I’m gonna make some pumpkin ones next .i can have those. Plain and cheese too
Shame as I like fruit ones and with dates and walnuts….denial is the name of the game!
Sign off now to water the plants
    Chris

    • Oh Chris, surely all of this with your Dad must point out to him and to those in charge that he needs much help. I believe he may be truthful about the other patient if they are not well staffed some “sun downers” who get confused at night can roam around and do little things. Poor Dad. He must be frightened and I’m pleased you showed your strength and made it clear you are watching over him and won’t be pushed around. I can’t help but feel a bit for the nurses if they are that understaffed that they can’t keep their eye on the patients any better than that.
Your scones sound so English. I don’t know why we don’t make more scones over here. Now you’re made me hungry for something sweet but don’t want to bother…conundrum…appetite versus lethargy. Sorry you didn’t get to the coast. Love, Sue

      • Chris, so sorry about all that with your Dad. It is so hard for them to realise they cannot take care of themselves anymore. To say you are never going to be home again must be very difficult. but sometimes you have to make that choice for them. Please be good to yourself as well.
        Love and prayers
        Tonie

    • CHRIS…….O HECK LOVE, THAT IS AWFUL WHAT IS GOING ON WITH YOUR DAD…..IT MUST BE EXTRA DIFFICULT FOR YOU TO KNOW WHAT DAD IS SAYING TO BE TRUE, OR IN HIS HEAD BECAUSE OF THE DRUGS, WHAT A PICKLE.
FUNNY I MADE SCONES LAST WEEK TOO, AND LIKE YOU IT WAS A SCORCHER…..BUT I ENJOY DOING IT, HEAT OR NOT, THEY ARE NOT AS GOOD AS WHEN I MADE THEM IN THE UK, AS THE FLOUR IS NOT THE SAME, YOU CAN’T BUY SELF-RAISING FLOUR OVER HERE, SO YOU HAVE TO JUDGE HOW MUCH BAKING POWDER TO PUT INTO THE PLAIN STUFF, AND ITS NOT ALWAYS RIGHT……….
MAYBE AFTER ALL YOUR APPOINTMENTS HAVE BEEN ATTENDED TO, YOU CAN HAVE SOME QUALITY TIME AT THE SHED…….THINKING OF YOU MATE……LOVE….JEN X

  34. I think they are understaffed at the hosp.too .altho I read on the website they are 105pc staffed..but it does appear to me that they are..the other day after the meds trolley had been around we picked some tablets off the floor. We handed them in but it all seems to point to being rushed.
The big thing now for him is the enemas not working along with the fibregel.he won’t have any more enemas he says and is protesting with the fibre stuff.as the nurse said to me tonite they can’t make him take stuff . They are very patient with him and very kind tho.
Going to be cooler tomorrow ..I can feel myself better already !
Managing to get bits done so am catching up
Must say I’m not looking forward to this nebuliser appt . But I feel safer doing it at the Drs
I can’t get over her telling me like that.and also telling the Dr she told me too
Ok gonna think of something pleasant…..Must be there somewhere …
    Chris

    • Chris, that total of employees might be for all shifts. I’m glad they are kind to him. Finding a pill on the floor doesn’t sound too good, though. I’ll bet he would swallow a laxative pill form. Poor man. Don’t be afraid of your appt. It will be fine, that’s why you’re making sure, right? Love, Sue

  35. Oh I just read this and I thought I’d say I caught up with the nurse on the drugs round and gave her the dropped meds.i wouldn’t have liked to get her into trouble and thought it was up to her what she then would do

  36. Sue
That’s what we thought..someone didn’t have their meds or something.
So many different languages spoken and difficult to understand on times..both patients and nurses!

Hope all had a good and restful holiday
    Chris

    • Chris, I had a quiet day, speaking strictly for myself. It is 9:40 and just now getting dark enough for folks to start setting off fireworks. Dogs okay thus far, I’ll be glad when the noise stops.
Yes, I know you have many immigrants in England as do we but often the various languages can make patients feel isolated and afraid. It’s confusing. One day at a time, right? But he must poop or he will be miserable and that’s one point he can’t get stubborn about. Sue

  37. SUE…….HOPE YOU AND THE DOGS HAD A QUIET NIGHT….YOU WOULD THINK IT WAS THE 4TH OF JULY HERE IN FRANCE, FIRST TIME IN 8YRS WE HAVE HEARD FIREWORKS CLOSE TO THE HOUSE HERE……DON’T KNOW WHAT WAS BEING CELEBRATED, BUT WE ALSO HAD ANOTHER STORM (THIRD IN FIVE DAYS). NEEDLESS TO SAY SACHA WAS FREAKED AGAIN, I WENT INTO DH’S ROOM AS THE RAIN WAS BATTERING THE WINDOWS AND SLEEP WAS DIFFICULT, WE ENDED UP ALL THREE OF US IN M DH’S BED ALL CUDDLED UP PLAYING EYE-SPY AT 6AM…….NO COURSE NOT THE DOG TOO….TUT!!! HE IS NOT THAT CLEVER……….HAVE A RESTFUL WEEKEND MY FRIEND…..LOVE YOU….JEN X

    • Jennie, Sounds like you might have some new American neighbors. Poor Sacha, I know what they can do to pooches. Sorry you all had a bad night. We did better than you with Jake basically sleeping through it thanks to be hard of hearing and George in bed with us wearing his Thundershirt. I was more agitated than he was because some fools in the empty field across the street didn’t stop setting them off until 11:30 last night. It’s light until almost ten this time of year so guess they started late and wanted to use them all up. They sure did. Gave me a frightful headache. George cuddled up and went to sleep. Jim and I watched TV.
I have had a rotten few days. Seems I’ve had a bladder infection and trying to sleep for the last two nights has been impossible. Called and got some meds today. Hopefully it will start to clear up. This up and down all night to the toilet is exhausting and frustrating.
Hope your gut is improving and you are resting better with the exception of last night, of course. Still think it’s some rabble rousing Americans…we’re good at that. Love, Sue

  38. Good morning all:
Exhausted doesn’t quite explain the way I feel this am !!
A good time was had by all yesterday and last night we went to a local fireworks display near the river. Beautiful. Kids make you do things you had left behind and you rediscover them. Afterwards a guy near us set off another display right over top of us, it was awesome !! Came home and played with sparklers and had ice cream cones. After one before I went to sleep and up at 7. UGGH, must get ready for church and get the minions ready.
Jennie, Chris, Donna, Glad you are all having good days ! Lyn, take care and get well soon.
    Love to all
    Tonie

    • Tonie, Hope you got to come home after church and kick back for a bit. Sounds like you had a wonderful Fourth and the kids enjoyed all of it. Bet Nikki is missing each of them and glad to hear she’s sending money for the food “mill”. It is amazing how kids can eat sometimes. So you had some snake carnage in the yard. Sounds like the grands are adjusting to the country life very easily. So fun. Sorry about Nathan’s obsession. I know that must be difficult at times for you, Nikki and him.
I’ve had a bad week, hope next one is better. Should be with the help of these antibiotics. Hate this peeing all the time…gees. Get some rest in any way you can. Love, Sue

      • Sue:
Resting after my 2nd injection of the back. Sorry to hear you have been having it bad. I still pray for your strength everyday. He is storing them all up for one “pow” on you ! I am down to two kids (He does love me) Sean took his two home and Hailey decided to stay in “civilization” rather than come here. Her siblings are not sad , they say she is too bossy.
I picked up the money and shopped on my way home. SO the larder is stocked with all the kid food I would never buy for me. Funny thing is their favorite thing were the Fiber One Brownies I bought for me πŸ™‚ WHo knew ??
Taking a forced rest so the shot will do good things. But really have so much to do still I can ill afford it.
        Take care , love you
        Tonie

  39. Well
All went well with the nebuliser …advice please, should I feel burning back of throat and in chest..mouth too
Rang the sister back and she said I will be aware of something and to keep at it ,the good will out way
    Mmm sjogrens
    Don’t no…
    Chris

    • Chris, I don’t think it’s that unusual to feel what you are but with the Sjogren’s you are naturally more sensitive due to probably, the dryness. We’ll see I guess if it is going to help you. Hope so. How’s all else? Love, Sue

    • CHRIS…..GLAD IT WENT WELL WITH THE NEBULISER…..HOW ARE THING GOING WITH YOUR DAD, ANY FURTHER ON? OR HAS HE DEFINITELY RULED OUT A MOVE TO A CARE HOME….I HOPE YOU ARE LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF, SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE SUFFERING AGAIN…TAKE CARE LOVE……….HUGS..JEN XX

      • Well Jen I just swapped one problem for another…it just finds me
Breathing went ok with the nebuliser I thought great..then about 5mins later my lips were burning
        Then my chest
So will I get used to ….that’s if I do it again…watch this space!
Good things are going ok for you

  40. Well am thinking of not doing it as it’s still burning .will it go …shall I continue …is it normal then to feel it burning .will it do any damage if I do it again ?? Does it get used to it ? If so how long to get used to it.
Oh dear all these questions ..sorry Sue
    Chris

    • Chris, if it hurts more than it helps, only you can decide. Doctors don’t always understand about how we feel with Sjogren’s and how dry a human can be so different rules. No I don’t think it will damage but frankly I’ve lost track of what it’s supposed to do for you. Sue

      • Yea sue.
        I’ve lost track too
I think she said it would get moisture to my lungs
She thought it mite be asthma acquired by sjogrens
Don’t know what to do..think on it ..mite try a steam inhalation
Anyway I hope you are feel a bit better with the bladder
It takes a time for the bladder to behave
        Chris

    • Chris, I thought maybe it was for that lingering cough. I have had a lot of sore throats lately and often find it difficult to distinguish between the Sjogren’s and a virus. A lot of extra mucus, pain and tightness seems to go with it. If the saline is hurting you, maybe the steam would be better. It’s difficult to know how much to just live with. Have you been seen by an ear/nose/and throat specialist? Have you had tube passed down the throat to see how tight it is? How is your swallowing with dry foods? Always have a glass of liquid there when you eat? Just thinking out loud or on here. Love you, Sue

      • Sue
Well she says the cough and sore airways go together but it seems now the airways are the biggest problem
Yep the ent spec passed me onto this dual ent/resp clinic.they looked down my throat with a tube the vocal cords were red and swollen.cant eat dry foods can’t chew them at all ,always have some sauce and water
I tried the steroid inhaler and I think it’s eased a bit will try steam later
        Chris

  41. SUE……SORRY YOU ARE NOT SO GOOD, OH MAN I REMEMBER ALL ABOUT PEEING……I HOPE THE TABLETS KICK IN QUICKLY AND YOU ARE SOON ON THE MEND…….
THINGS HAVE IMPROVED A BIT HERE, A LOT MORE COMFORTABLE THAN I WAS, STARTED DOING A FULL PILATES PROGRAM, AND ITS HELPING SUCH A LOT WITH MY BACK, AS ITS STRENGTHENING MY CORE……NOT SAYING MORE AS I MIGHT JINX THINGS……HOT AGAIN SO ANOTHER SLEEPLESS NIGHT I GUESS……TAKE CARE MY FRIEND…LOVE YOU ..JEN X

  42. Tonie, Surprised GD wanted to stay where the count of kids is high. Teen? Who knows how they think. So who is left with you, Nathan and Devin? So glad it sounds like the shot went well and now please rest and give it a chance. I know you still have much to do but none of it will get done if your body doesn’t heal a bit or as much as possible. Glad the larder is full and know the kids are having a wonderful time with you. Maybe the switch to country life was a bit too much of a shock for Hailey. I know she’s had a hard time finding her place since her Dad died. Hope Nikki’s plans to move are progressing well.
Oh yes, good old me. I’m so tired of all these problems. They’re getting in my way. Had to cancel PT again today but bladder bothersome and I feel rotten all over with nasty headache, too. Just have to hope the antibiotics work. We haven’t had any serious heat like they have in Portland and I am so grateful. Our old house gets a bit stuffy in the late afternoon and evening without insulation but not too bad. Do be good now…I’m watching you. Love, Sue

  43. Chris, that’s right. Now I recall all of the order of things for you. I just wanted to be sure the ENT had seen your throat and now recall. It is a confusing picture, I know. I would imagine the steroid inhaler would help and be less offensive to the membranes than any saline. Just have to try new things to find out.
So how was the christening over the weekend. Saw the headlines and it looked like such fun. Saw the little princess being wheeled by her Mom in the lovely baby carriage. Didn’t you say that it happened close to you? How’s DH doing dividing up the pills between morning and night? Thinking of you. Love, Sue

  44. Yea it’s about four miles down the road from the shed . We sometimes go there it’s got lovely grounds and woods to walk around.the chuch is so pretty inside
Bp for DH seems ok..but it could be the hot weather making it lower..have to see but he’s not so tired taking them like this .
Good job it’s cooler with you hope it stays that way for you.blimmin bladders I find mine takes ages to forget it doesn’t need to go !
DH just taken bp 156/86…what you think ?
    Chris

  45. Chris, well I guess it’s about time your poor husband had a break with his B/P. Sounds like you’ve happened onto a solution. Hope all is okay. Love, Sue

  46. Bit rough today sue..started the inhaled steroid again and the asthma nurse said to double the dose.but my mouth throat dry, sore all down my throat ,I don’t think I’ll be able to treat what I’ve got.i don’t think they know how sjogrens is effected by it all. But if I can’t take it what do I do
I’ve done steam inhalation all the way thru …and rinsed my mouth and gargled after inhaling .
So I went downstairs and made some sweet potato muffins! And it’s now nearly 1am! Smells nice…
    How’s you?
    Chris

    • Chris, oh dear. To some extent I do understand. I have had a sore throat and esophagus since I had radiation treatment and even before, but worse now. Since there is no treatment for esophageal and tracheal burns, according to my DD who is a speech therapist, I also have to live with a certain amount of swallowing and breathing discomfort. It seems sweet lady that you were better off before this current treatment. I think the most important thing for those of us with Sjogren’s to do is to drink, drink, drink. When I sleep for a few hours and don’t drink I wake up so dry I can’t swallow and this is with a humidifier going. I drink bottled water or seltzer, fizzy water all the time or juice which helps the gut. Don’t you also get relief from the steam? Then keep it up. Steroids and saline are just apparently not the answer. Sometimes doctors feel the need to help because most folks don’t want to leave the office without an answer and it’s not always helpful. Don’t do the new treatments if they’re making you this miserable. We only have so many layers of mucosal linings, right? It’s like putting acid on your skin…if it hurts, stop. I’m so sorry.
Thanks for asking. I am peeing less thanks to antibiotics. Still no energy but got a bit more done today. Lovely weather here…cool and sunny. Had a frustration with a credit card company and lost it on the phone, started crying. They thought one of my purchases was fraud and didn’t call me so they froze my account. I was furious and it caused me to make about four long phone calls. AAGGHH!! Finally got it straightened out. DO you remember our shoe conversations? Well, the two pair I bought last month had to be taken back yesterday. Dear daughter did it for me. Our shoe store is very understanding. They were made of cloth but so much arthritis in my toes they couldn’t take it and that was just trying to wear them in the house for a few mins. Another AAGGHH! Maybe we should go barefoot but I’m afraid we’d slip and fall plus get taken in for testing on our minds. Later dear, enjoy those delicious muffins. Sleep. Love you, Sue

    • Chris:
YUM Sweet potato muffins. Sounds good. I am still intending on the recipe book. Just got a bit backlogged with life. Still working over recipes.
So glad your dh is doing good today. I have a friend who is coming over to Manchester next week for business. I was invited to go along, but not able to right now πŸ™‚
      Do take care
      Love
      Tonie

  47. Ooo,tonie what a trip to be invited On…mind you they say it always rains in Manchester…It is in a wet part of the country
    Sue
I remember you getting those shoes….Im exactly the same..a few times of wear around the house and no good…what will happen when my old stuff wears out I don’t know..BUT my last ones seem ok but then I haven’t worn them out yet…
The steam does help.im taking gaviscon to coat the throat .yea I’m not gonna do the other stuff anymore
Sue how awful,to have to live with those burns..does nothing ease it for you
Water infections take it out of you and then so do antibiotics ,a double whammy
How frustrating with the card co.it seems to take so much effort to sort stuff out these days
Just taken a slug of gaviscon and Honda try to sleep chris

    • Chris dear, I’m sure it’s no worse than you go through with your throat. It just doesn’t go away and is productive, choking all the time. Hope you are asleep right now and read this in the AM. As far as shoes, I just keep going back to brands that have been good in the past. Ordered some today from Timberland.com. They have free returns and have worked for me in the past. My rheumy told me to wear shoes that are a bit too large. Jim just got in. I already ate dinner. He was delayed by problems at the jail. Tomorrow dear…Sleep on. Sue
